Sr. Thermal Process Engineer

Corning•Town of Erwin, NY
•$97,286 - $133,768•Onsite

About The Position

Corning Environmental Technologies (CET) develops cellular ceramic substrates and particulate filters that help customers meet environmental standards. The Senior Thermal Process Engineer advances thermal process technology across CET through experimentation, process development, and implementation of robust manufacturing solutions. The position is based in Corning, New York, and requires up to 25% travel, including occasional international travel. Occasional off-shift work may be needed to support trials and collaboration across global locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in ceramic, chemical, materials, mechanical, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in manufacturing, process engineering, or development.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, execute, and interpret experiments using Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical process control.
  • Strong data-analysis skills using tools such as Excel, JMP, and OSIsoft PI, including with large or continuous process data sets.
  • Working knowledge of thermal processing fundamentals, including heat and mass transfer, airflow, atmosphere, and thermal-history effects on products.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply structured engineering, statistical, and project-management methods to solve manufacturing problems and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Experience leading project workstreams that implement new processes in manufacturing.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of ceramics processing, raw-material characterization, and material response.
  • Experience developing measurement and characterization technologies.
  • Familiarity with thermal equipment, combustion or electric heating, controls, instrumentation, technical drawings, and equipment documentation.
  • Experience transferring technology across plants or delivering step-change manufacturing innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments and manufacturing trials; build process understanding using engineering analysis, thermal profiling, measurement, and product characterization; translate results into operating windows, control plans, specifications, and manufacturing standards.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and improvements in process variation, defects, yield, cost, capacity, cycle time, and process capability.
  • Scale new products and processes from development through manufacturing implementation.
  • Apply knowledge of thermal equipment, controls, instrumentation, and utilities to support process development; identify equipment-related variation and provide engineering support for equipment-related process issues, engaging equipment specialists as needed.
  • Support design reviews, installation, start-up, qualification, and acceptance testing when process performance or product outcomes are affected.
  • Evaluate technical risks, alternatives, and enabling technologies and recommend actions.
  • Lead technical workstreams and supplier activities with limited guidance.
  • Document and transfer learning through technical reports, standards, reference materials, and intellectual property disclosures.

Benefits

  • Company-wide bonuses and long-term incentives.
  • 100% company-paid pension benefit with fixed contributions.
  • 401(k) matching contributions; combined retirement contributions can reach between 7% and 12% of pay, depending on age and years of service.
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Paid parental leave and family-building support.
  • Fitness benefits.
  • Company-paid life insurance and disability benefits.
  • Disease management programs.
  • Paid time off.
