Sr. Thermal Design Engineer

IEA•Kenosha, WI
•$90,000 - $110,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Senior Thermal Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of heat transfer equipment and products. The role covers heat transfer calculations and predictions; review, interpretation, and action based on laboratory test data; heat transfer modeling, programming, and application development with Kuli; prototype planning and testing; and assessment of prototype, process, and program costs. It also includes product validation or certification assessment, technical support for customers, suppliers, partners, and internal departments, concept and standards development, project and program scheduling, and prototype building. The engineer uses finite element analysis and applies awareness of computational fluid dynamics. The role qualifies new products and maintains standards for existing products, while helping maintain a positive, discrimination-free workplace. The work location includes an office, a metal fabrication and assembly shop, and customer or representative locations visited in the field, including domestic and international travel. Travel is rare and may involve trips of 1–5 days or 5–15+ days. Shop-area safety glasses with side shields and safety-toe shoes are required; additional protective equipment may be required depending on the job site and length of stay.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of heat transfer theory, radiator design, materials, assembly, and operating characteristics.
  • Familiarity with new product development cycles.
  • Ability to work on technology programs while considering overall budget and timing.
  • Knowledge of predictive software, specifically Kuli.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to conduct research, including problem identification, data collection and analysis, solution formulation, testing, and evaluation.
  • Skill in dealing with employees, suppliers, and end users.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with CAE tools, including Kuli, FEA, and CFD.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive professional relationships in person, by phone, and by email.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical, thermal, energy engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Ten years of experience in heat exchanger design, calculations, and manufacturing.
  • At least seven years of product technology development experience.
  • Driver’s license; passport for foreign travel as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Perform heat transfer calculations and predictions.
  • Review, interpret, and act on laboratory test data involving heat transfer, materials analysis, and some structural analysis.
  • Develop heat transfer models, programs, and applications using Kuli.
  • Plan and conduct prototype testing.
  • Assess prototype, process, and program costs.
  • Assess product validation and/or certification.
  • Provide technical support to customers, suppliers, partners, and internal departments.
  • Develop product concepts and standards focused on materials, design, and testing.
  • Schedule projects and programs and build prototypes.
  • Use finite element analysis and maintain awareness of computational fluid dynamics.
  • Qualify new products and maintain standards for existing products.
  • Help maintain a positive, discrimination-free workplace for all employees.
