About The Position

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. This role is not eligible for immigration sponsorship (H-1B, TN, etc.) and cannot hire individuals with CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT. This is a hybrid position requiring onsite work on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center in Michigan's lower Peninsula within the Electric Territory. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package available). The Senior System Protection Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and protection of moderately complex high voltage power systems. They will oversee lower-level engineers and technicians in developing and implementing protection schemes for transmission and distribution systems, and coordinate these schemes with other utilities. The role also involves developing control philosophies and sequences for larger, moderately complex generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Fault Analysis Engineer ensures the correct operation of protective systems on Consumers Energy’s 138kV and 46kV distribution system, responds to emergent fault events and disturbances to support real-time operations and customer outage restoration, and completes detailed studies of fault events to ensure correct operation and identify faulty operations of protection schemes. This role collaborates with Engineering and Operations to develop corrective action plans, develops monitoring recommendations and communication settings, supports the evaluation of new equipment, and supports NERC compliance (PRC-002, PRC-004, & PRC-005).

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited university with four (4) or more years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field tests of protection systems to verify their proper operation.
  • Maintain accurate records of protection system designs and modifications.
  • Assist in the development of new protection devices and systems.
  • Manage projects related to the installation or upgrade of protection systems.
  • Investigate faults in protection systems and develop solutions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Monitor changes in the electric power industry and revise protection designs as necessary.
  • Prepare technical reports documenting the design of protection systems.
  • Coordinate with other engineers to ensure that the protection system interacts properly with the rest of the power system.
  • Select appropriate protection devices and settings based on system characteristics and desired performance.
  • Develop models and simulations to test the performance of moderately complex protection devices under various conditions.
  • Design, implement, and oversee protection schemes for high voltage power systems.
  • Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary.
