About The Position

Apple's Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization supports Apple’s enterprise and customer technology systems. Enterprise Technology Services (ETS), part of IS&T, delivers global-scale platforms and services that help keep Apple’s operations secure and running. The team manages identity, device security, anti-abuse, supply chain, manufacturing, and partner integration platforms, protecting data on more than 2.5 billion devices worldwide. ETS also owns systems that ramp factory production ahead of global product launches, including systems for serial numbers, network credentials, and verified software. The Sr. Software Engineer will design and develop applications that handle petabytes of data and millions of transactions per hour, and develop, enhance, and maintain highly scalable distributed platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • At least 5 years of proven professional software development experience; longer experience is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of proven Java experience, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming principles, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns such as GoF, with a focus on testable, maintainable, and extensible backend code.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and shipping high-scale, high-performance, highly available, fault-tolerant, and secure cloud-based distributed systems.
  • Experience with message-driven and event-driven architectures and messaging systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ; event sourcing; CQRS; and reliable asynchronous communication between distributed services.
  • Experience with caching strategies and in-memory data technologies such as Redis, Memcached, Hazelcast, or Ehcache, including cache invalidation, distributed caching architectures, and session management for high-throughput applications.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Oracle, Postgres, or MySQL and NoSQL databases such as Cassandra or MongoDB, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning through execution plan analysis, indexing strategy, and query rewriting.

Nice To Haves

  • Track record leading software projects as a team tech lead and mentoring software engineers.
  • Hands-on experience using GenAI coding tools such as Claude, Copilot, or Codex to accelerate software development, improve code quality, and streamline debugging and testing.
  • Experience with search and indexing technologies such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Solr, including search architecture, index optimization, query tuning, and full-text search for large-scale datasets.
  • Experience with data lake and lakehouse architectures, modern table formats such as Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Apache Hudi, cloud object storage such as S3, GCS, or ADLS, and scalable architectures that unify batch and real-time analytics.
  • Experience designing and implementing APIs, including RESTful principles, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design such as OpenAPI/Swagger or Protobuf, API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, backward compatibility, and long-term evolution.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop applications handling petabytes of data and millions of transactions per hour.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain highly scalable distributed platforms.
