About The Position

Join Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization, which supports Apple’s customer and enterprise technology systems. Enterprise Technology Services (ETS), part of IS&T, delivers global-scale platforms and services that support Apple’s operations. ETS manages identity, device security, anti-abuse, supply chain, manufacturing, and partner integration platforms, including systems used to ramp factory production for global product launches. The Sr. Software Engineer will design and develop applications handling petabytes of data and millions of transactions per hour, and develop, enhance, and maintain highly scalable distributed platforms. The role includes architecting and rolling out features across a modular Java platform, building scalable services for data and integration workflows, evaluating emerging technologies, and operating and maintaining production platforms. The engineer will also set technical standards, review designs and code, and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • At least 5 years of proven professional software development experience; longer experience is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of proven Java experience, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming principles, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns, with a focus on testable, maintainable, and extensible backend code.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and shipping high-scale, high-performance, highly available, fault-tolerant, and secure cloud-based distributed systems.
  • Experience with message-driven and event-driven architectures and messaging systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ; event sourcing; CQRS; and reliable asynchronous communication between distributed services.
  • Experience with caching strategies and in-memory data technologies such as Redis, Memcached, Hazelcast, or Ehcache, including cache invalidation, distributed caching, and session management.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning through execution plan analysis, indexing strategy, and query rewriting.
  • Track record of leading software projects within a team as a tech lead while mentoring software engineers.
  • Hands-on experience using GenAI coding tools such as Claude, Copilot, or Codex to accelerate software development, improve code quality, and streamline debugging and testing.
  • Experience with search and indexing technologies such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Solr, including search architecture, index optimization, query tuning, and full-text search for large-scale datasets.
  • Experience with data lake and lakehouse architectures, modern table formats such as Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Apache Hudi, cloud object storage such as S3, GCS, or ADLS, and architectures that unify batch and real-time analytics.
  • Experience designing and implementing APIs, including RESTful API principles, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design, API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, backward compatibility, and long-term API evolution.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with synchronous and asynchronous service integration over REST, SOAP, or HTTP; gRPC is a plus where applicable.
  • Experience with actor systems such as Akka or Pekko, or high-performance concurrency frameworks such as LMAX Disruptor.
  • Experience with object or cloud storage, including S3-compatible APIs.
  • Contributions to Apache or other open-source projects.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and containerization such as Docker.
  • Programming experience in Python, Lua, Go, or Scala.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop applications that handle petabytes of data and millions of transactions per hour.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain highly scalable distributed platforms.
  • Architect, design, and roll out new features across a modular Java platform.
  • Design and develop scalable services for data and integration workflows.
  • Evaluate products and emerging technologies and adopt them into projects.
  • Operate and maintain the existing production platform.
  • Set technical standards and review designs and code.
  • Lead software projects as a tech lead and mentor other engineers.
