Sr. Software Engineer

Unity Technologies Canada Company•Mountain View, CA

About The Position

Unity is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to architect and implement distributed data systems for a robust, near-real-time reporting platform used for analytics and decision-making. The role focuses on designing, building, and operating high-throughput, low-latency data-processing pipelines and services for internal teams and external customers. It operates across distributed systems, stream processing, and cloud-native infrastructure, with an emphasis on correctness, reliability, scalability, architectural clarity, and production ownership. The engineer will own core attribution pipelines and services that process mobile advertising events, including a production migration from a legacy event-handling layer to a gRPC-based service. The role also improves latency-sensitive caching and persistence systems, supports ad-serving infrastructure, monitors data health, and maintains batch jobs that produce daily BigQuery datasets. The team works closely with ML, Reporting, and external partners to provide accurate, timely signals and investigate and recover from incidents. The role offers zone-based anticipated base salary ranges: Zone A, $210,300–$273,400; Zone B, $187,200–$243,300; and Zone C, $165,600–$215,200 USD. The position may also be eligible for equity awards and company incentive plans. Final compensation depends on factors including location, experience, background, and skills. Unity describes benefits that may vary by country and employment status, including health, life, and disability insurance; commute subsidy; employee stock ownership; retirement or pension plans; vacation and personal days; parental leave and family-care programs; office snacks; mental health and wellbeing support; employee resource groups; employee assistance; training and development; and volunteering and donation matching.

Requirements

  • Strong foundation in distributed systems and systems design.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating large-scale data-processing systems.
  • Deep understanding of streaming concepts, including exactly-once semantics, watermarking and event-time processing, stateful stream processing, checkpointing and recovery, and backpressure handling.
  • Production experience with Apache Flink, Spark, Kafka, or similar technologies.
  • Proficiency in Python, Java, or Scala.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow for stream and batch coordination.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures and distributed infrastructure, including Kubernetes, containerization, and cloud platforms.
  • Sufficient English knowledge for professional verbal and written communication with colleagues and partners worldwide.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience migrating legacy systems to modern architectures in production environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end attribution pipeline, ensuring attribution data is accurately processed from ad interaction through delivery to the data warehouse, ML teams, and Reporting teams.
  • Build and operate high-throughput, latency-sensitive services and streaming pipelines for Unity's mobile advertising infrastructure.
  • Design, build, and operate real-time ad-event processing services that receive events from mobile SDKs and other partners, process data at scale, perform enrichments, transformations, and privacy operations, and deliver signals to internal and external partners.
  • Lead the production migration from a legacy event-handling layer to a modern gRPC-based service, designing backfill and failover behavior while preserving data accuracy during cutover.
  • Improve the low-latency caching layer serving data for ad requests and own persistence systems that link auction, fill, placement, and gamer identities across the ad lifecycle.
  • Build and own ad-serving services, including negative targeting and block listing, as well as logging, tracing, authentication, Kafka-backed caching, health checks, readiness probes, and Docker-based integrations.
  • Monitor real-time data health, including anomalies, event delivery rates, and data quality signals.
  • Build and maintain batch data pipeline jobs that produce daily datasets in BigQuery.
  • Collaborate with ML, Reporting, and external partners to provide timely and accurate signal reporting.
  • Lead investigation and recovery when issues occur.
