About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer (C++/Python) will join Medtronic’s Affera Mapping and Ablation System Software Team, working on medical technology for treating cardiac arrhythmias. The role focuses on designing, developing, and testing high-performance, real-time visualization software and intuitive interfaces for advanced medical devices. The engineer will own critical software features and collaborate with other engineering teams to bring them from concept through production. The position includes developing network and serial communication interfaces between desktop applications and connected hardware, integrating asynchronous device communication with the user interface and application data layers, and maintaining responsive, reliable software. The role also involves performance optimization, testing, documentation, and improving team development processes. The engineer will participate in pre-clinical in-vivo system evaluations. The team works onsite a minimum of four days per week to support professional growth and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • Expertise working in Python/C++ environments, ideally with ROS or device-level communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing Ethernet/TCP/IP communication interfaces using socket programming, including connection management, message serialization, and certificate-based secure communication.
  • Experience implementing serial device interfaces such as RS-232 or USB-to-serial, including baud rate and port configuration, message framing, checksum validation, flow control, and timeout handling.
  • Ability to troubleshoot network and serial communication issues using packet captures, serial logs, and device simulators, with an understanding of asynchronous I/O and thread-safe integration with desktop UI applications.
  • Experience in desktop UI development, such as Qt/QML, PyQt, OpenGL, WPF, or similar.
  • Experience building real-time or data-rich interfaces for technical or clinical applications.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and design patterns.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to addressing challenges.
  • Experience with software version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience working with UI designers and implementing designs created in Figma or similar tools.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms and services such as AWS or Azure.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tools and practices, including automated testing and deployment.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, real-time visualization applications in a collaborative team environment.
  • Own key software features and drive their development from concept through production.
  • Collaborate with hardware, QA, DevOps, and other cross-functional teams to support integration and high-quality software delivery.
  • Design, implement, and maintain network and serial communication interfaces between desktop applications and connected hardware.
  • Integrate asynchronous device communication with UI and application data layers, using buffering, thread synchronization, timeout handling, connection monitoring, and recovery from communication failures as appropriate.
  • Optimize software performance for low latency, high reliability, and scalability in a regulated environment.
  • Implement and maintain unit, integration, and automated testing of communication interfaces under normal and fault conditions, including delayed or malformed messages, connection loss, and reconnection.
  • Document software designs, coding practices, and development workflows.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the team’s development processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Attend and participate in pre-clinical in-vivo system evaluations.
