About The Position

Join Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) group, which develops and manages systems, frameworks, and applications used by Apple customers and employees. Work may support areas such as apple.com, Apple Stores, AppleCare, identity, operations, recruiting, people management, data centers, and data processing and AI/ML systems. As a senior-level Software Engineer, design, develop, test, document, improve, and maintain code, primarily in Java and other languages as needed. Participate throughout projects—from planning and design through implementation and future iterations—and contribute to solution design. The role calls for a self-motivated, proactive, results-driven engineer who pays close attention to detail, delivers high-quality solutions, works toward on-time project delivery, and communicates and collaborates effectively with internal and external partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience; longer experience is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience implementing and shipping high-scale, high-performance, highly available, fault-tolerant, and secure cloud-based distributed systems, including API implementation such as REST, RPC, or GraphQL.
  • At least 3 years of experience with relational databases such as Postgres or MySQL and NoSQL databases such as Cassandra or MongoDB, including schema design and query optimization.
  • At least 2 years of Java experience, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming principles, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns such as GoF, with a focus on testable, maintainable, and extensible backend code.
  • Self-motivation, proactivity, results orientation, attention to detail, and dedication to high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Track record of leading software projects as a team tech lead and mentoring software engineers.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools for building, testing, deploying, and releasing containerized applications on cloud-based Kubernetes, such as AWS EKS, GCP GKE, or Azure AKS.
  • Expertise in Java web frameworks such as ServiceTalk, Spring, Dropwizard, Quarkus, or Micronaut, and unit testing frameworks such as JUnit or Mockito.
  • Experience with tooling languages such as Go, Python, or Ruby and distributed orchestration and computing systems such as Airflow, Spark, or Flink.
  • Understanding of advanced JVM internals, including garbage collection, memory allocation, JIT, or JNI.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts and protocols such as HTTP/HTTPS, CDN, edge computing, load balancing, or the OSI model.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, document, improve, and maintain software code, primarily in Java.
  • Participate in all aspects of projects, from planning and design to implementation and future iterations.
  • Contribute to designing software solutions.
  • Collaborate with Software Engineers, Project and Product Managers, Product Designers, internal and external partners, and Apple leadership.
