About The Position

Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization supports Apple’s devices, transactions, and internal technology systems. Retail and Marcom Engineering builds and operates systems and experiences for Apple’s online and physical stores, as well as interactive marketing experiences and tools. The Financing & Retail Systems team is seeking an experienced server-side software engineer to build reliable experiences for Apple customers and Retail Store employees worldwide. This is a hands-on backend development role focused on creative, scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant solutions. The engineer partners with engineering, QA, product, program, and carrier teams to solve complex problems, improve service performance and reliability, and troubleshoot production issues. The role also contributes to technical design, code review, engineering practices, and teammate mentoring. The engineer designs and builds backend services and APIs supporting device activation, plan selection, pricing, and order management with major carriers. The role covers the full software lifecycle, from technical design and implementation through testing, deployment, release, and production support, including integrations with carrier systems and internal Apple platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience; longer experience is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of Java experience, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns, with a focus on testable, maintainable, and extensible backend code.
  • Experience building production applications with the Spring ecosystem, including dependency injection, auto-configuration, reactive programming with WebFlux, and Spring-based microservice patterns.
  • Experience designing and implementing APIs, including REST, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design, API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, backward compatibility, and long-term evolution.
  • Experience with message-driven and event-driven architectures, messaging systems, event sourcing, CQRS, and reliable asynchronous communication between distributed services.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning using execution-plan analysis, indexing, and query rewriting.
  • Track record of leading software projects as a team tech lead and mentoring software engineers.
  • Hands-on experience using GenAI coding tools such as Claude, Copilot, or Codex to accelerate software development, improve code quality, and streamline debugging and testing.
  • Comfort using CI/CD tools to build, test, deploy, and release containerized applications on cloud-based Kubernetes platforms.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and infrastructure, including HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP, CDN, load balancing, edge computing, DNS, and Zero Trust architecture.
  • Experience implementing authentication and authorization systems, including OAuth2, OIDC, SAML, JWT, SSO, RBAC/ABAC, and integrations with identity providers and directory services.
  • Experience with caching strategies and in-memory data technologies, including cache invalidation, distributed caching, and session management for high-throughput applications.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable backend services and APIs for device activation, plan selection, pricing, and order management with major carriers.
  • Develop, test, and deploy features across the full lifecycle, from technical design through release and production support.
  • Integrate with carrier systems and internal Apple platforms, translating carrier requirements into reliable, well-documented solutions.
  • Troubleshoot production issues using logs and monitoring, identify root causes, and prevent recurring problems.
  • Improve the performance, reliability, and maintainability of existing services, including order, pricing, and fulfillment flows.
  • Collaborate with product managers, QA engineers, program managers, and carrier partners to define requirements and deliver on schedule.
  • Review code and contribute to technical design discussions and engineering standards.
  • Mentor teammates and help strengthen engineering practices across the team.
  • Write and maintain automated tests, documentation, and runbooks to support service operation.
