About The Position

Symetra is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a team supporting CyberLife, its primary life insurance policy administration system. CyberLife is a mainframe application that administers most of Symetra’s life insurance business. The role provides additional engineering capacity to develop new products, expand system capabilities, and advance the platform toward more digital, real-time processing. The engineer will design, develop, test, and implement enhancements to the CyberLife platform, support integrations and APIs, and help move applications through development, QA, and production. The position also involves production troubleshooting, code reviews, architectural discussions, and mentoring fellow engineers. The role works collaboratively with business and technical stakeholders in an Agile environment. This is a remote-first role with flexible full-time or hybrid telecommuting arrangements. Remote employees must meet Symetra’s minimum internet requirements: at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload via fiber, cable, or DSL. Satellite, cellular broadband, other wireless technology, and wired dial-up are not permitted. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship and support are not provided.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting and enhancing life insurance policy administration platforms such as CyberLife, Life70, or other mainframe-based systems.
  • Strong background in COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and enterprise-scale mainframe application development.
  • Ability to collaborate in Agile environments and work closely with business and technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze complex requirements and deliver reliable, high-quality solutions.
  • Experience integrating legacy systems with modern technologies through REST APIs, SOAP services, JSON, and XML.
  • Ability to mentor colleagues, share knowledge, support team growth, and promote development best practices.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States at hire and maintain authorization throughout employment; employer work visa sponsorship and support are not provided.
  • For remote work, an internet connection of at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload through fiber, cable, or DSL is required; satellite, cellular broadband, other wireless technology, and wired dial-up are not permitted.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and implement enhancements for the CyberLife policy administration platform to support business and customer needs.
  • Participate in Agile/Kanban ceremonies, gather requirements, and provide effort estimates for new initiatives and system improvements.
  • Build and maintain secure, high-performing APIs and integrations that enable real-time data exchange and digital capabilities.
  • Support testing efforts, code deployments, and movement of applications through development, QA, and production environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, ensuring system stability, performance, and business continuity.
  • Conduct code reviews, contribute to architectural discussions, and provide mentorship and technical guidance to fellow engineers.

Benefits

  • 401(k) plan with immediate vesting and company matching up to 6%.
  • Paid vacation and sick time, flex days, and ten paid holidays.
  • Company matching that doubles employees’ community-giving impact.
  • Flexible full-time or hybrid telecommuting arrangements.
  • Eligibility for an annual bonus program.
