About The Position

Join Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization, which supports Apple devices, secure transactions, and the technology used by Apple customers and employees. Customer Systems builds and operates technology for Apple’s customer support experience, including contact center operations, Genius Bar software, and the AppleCare online support platform, which handles 6 billion visits per year. In this role, you will design and build microservices for low-latency, high-throughput customer experiences used by more than a million people daily across Apple Support websites, iOS apps, and phone-based frontends. You will own feature delivery from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production observability, while helping drive engineering practices and architecture across the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience; longer experience is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience with Java, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming principles, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns such as GoF, with a focus on testable, maintainable, and extensible backend code.
  • Experience building production applications with the Spring ecosystem, including dependency injection, auto-configuration, reactive programming with WebFlux, and Spring-based microservices patterns.
  • Solid understanding of JVM internals, including garbage collection, memory allocation, JIT, and JNI.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and shipping high-scale, high-performance, highly available, fault-tolerant, and secure cloud-based distributed systems.
  • Solid knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and infrastructure, including HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP, CDN, load balancing, edge computing, DNS, and Zero Trust architecture.
  • Track record of leading team software projects as a tech lead and mentoring software engineers.
  • Hands-on experience with GenAI coding tools such as Claude, Copilot, or Codex.
  • Experience with programming languages beyond Java, such as Go, Python, or Ruby, including practical use for automation scripting, infrastructure tooling, data processing pipelines, or build system customizations.
  • Experience designing and implementing APIs, including RESTful principles, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design with OpenAPI/Swagger or Protobuf, API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, backward compatibility, and long-term evolution.
  • Experience with caching strategies and in-memory data technologies such as Redis, Memcached, Hazelcast, or Ehcache, including cache invalidation, distributed caching architectures, and session management for high-throughput applications.

Nice To Haves

  • More than 5 years of professional software development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build microservices that power low-latency, high-throughput customer experiences across Apple Support websites, iOS apps, and phone-based frontends.
  • Own end-to-end feature delivery, including technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production observability.
  • Drive engineering best practices through code reviews, unit and integration testing, CI/CD pipeline improvements, and documentation.
  • Architect non-blocking, event-driven service pipelines capable of handling millions of concurrent requests with resilience and back-pressure management.
  • Contribute to API design and contract-first development, ensuring backward compatibility and clean integration across service boundaries.
  • Lead software projects within a team as a tech lead and mentor software engineers.
  • Use GenAI coding tools to accelerate software development, improve code quality, and streamline debugging and testing.
