About The Position

Alkira is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Backend Engineer to build and operate the distributed systems behind its CSX (Cloud Services Exchange), a platform for multi-cloud networking. The role owns product work from initial scoping and design through implementation, launch, and production operations, including both creating new capabilities and maintaining existing services.

The engineer will build scalable, resilient, and correct systems under real customer load; develop APIs and microservices using Java/Spring and Go; and use AI tools and workflows as a core part of development and operations. Ownership includes customer escalations, on-call responsibilities, telemetry, and bug fixes. The role also involves supporting concurrent projects and collaborating across geographically distributed teams.

Requirements

• B.S., M.S., or equivalent in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• 4–7 years of software engineering experience.
• Experience taking a product or capability from zero to shipped, and ability to inherit, understand, and improve an existing codebase.
• Daily use of AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot, with a point of view on using AI to ship faster.
• Strong computer science fundamentals and hands-on experience with Java/Spring and Go.
• Experience with distributed systems, REST API design, database schema design, and multithreading.
• Linux and kernel fluency, and comfort with container and Kubernetes deployment.
• Security-first thinking for distributed, multi-tenant systems.
• Product and customer empathy, including understanding why a feature matters.
• Ability to collaborate across teams of varying sizes that may be geographically distributed.
• Ability to multitask and support multiple concurrent projects.

Nice To Haves

• Networking experience, such as BGP, SD-WAN, overlays, or cloud networking.

Responsibilities

• Scope, design, build, ship, and own product ideas in production, taking them from 0 to 1.
• Build and maintain large-scale distributed systems for multi-cloud networking, with attention to resiliency, scale, and correctness under customer load.
• Use AI workflows and tools, including agentic workflows and LLM-powered development loops, to accelerate shipping and operations.
• Design, build, and maintain APIs and microservices using Java/Spring, Go, PostgreSQL, and Kubernetes.
• Operate the systems and products built, including handling customer escalations, on-call duties, telemetry, and bug fixes.
• Pick up, understand, and maintain existing services in the engineer's area.
• Work across teams of varying sizes, including geographically distributed teams.
• Support multiple concurrent projects.
