About The Position

The Sr. Refrigeration Laboratory Technician is responsible for supporting the testing, evaluation, troubleshooting, and development of refrigeration systems in a laboratory environment. This role requires a highly skilled technician with substantial hands-on experience working with commercial or industrial refrigeration equipment. The successful candidate will independently set up, operate, diagnose, modify, and maintain test systems while ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Due to the technical complexity of the testing environment, candidates must possess meaningful HVAC/R experience and demonstrate a strong understanding of refrigeration systems, controls, electrical systems, instrumentation, and troubleshooting methodologies.

Requirements

  • Associate degree, technical certification, or vocational training in HVAC, Refrigeration, Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience servicing, troubleshooting, installing, or commissioning HVAC/R equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of refrigeration cycles, airflow systems, compressors, condensers, evaporators, and expansion devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, control schematics, piping diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Experience with electrical troubleshooting, controls, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with refrigerant charging, recovery, leak detection, and system performance analysis.
  • Proficiency using diagnostic tools, gauges, multimeters, data acquisition systems, and other laboratory instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety practices and industry standards.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to safety and quality.
  • Collaborative team player capable of supporting engineers, technicians, and project teams.

Nice To Haves

  • 3+ years as an HVAC/R service technician or installer with demonstrated field troubleshooting experience.
  • 5+ years of responsibility for commercial or industrial HVAC/R systems as a facilities engineer, facilities technician, or maintenance specialist.
  • Experience working in an HVAC or refrigeration laboratory environment.
  • Vocational or technical school graduates with significant documented field experience in HVAC/R service and repair.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Experience supporting engineering product development or validation testing.
  • Understanding of commercial refrigeration, heat pumps, or air conditioning systems.
  • Ability to fabricate, braze, solder, and assemble refrigeration piping systems.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, monitor, and maintain refrigeration test equipment.
  • Support product development, performance testing, validation, and investigative projects.
  • Install, modify, and repair refrigeration systems, components, and instrumentation.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration system issues independently.
  • Collect, analyze, and document test data and observations.
  • Assist engineers in developing test procedures and executing laboratory test plans.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is calibrated, maintained, and operating safely.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory safety procedures and environmental regulations.
  • Support facility and laboratory refrigeration systems as needed.
  • Provide technical recommendations regarding equipment operation, test setup improvements, and troubleshooting solutions.
