About The Position

The Senior Project Engineer – Water Infrastructure serves as a technical and project leadership role responsible for delivering complex, high-impact water and wastewater projects that directly support regulatory compliance, water quality objectives, and long-term system reliability. This position operates with a high degree of autonomy, leading multi-disciplinary project teams and acting as a technical authority for water quality-driven capital improvements within a private utility environment that emphasizes efficiency, accountability, and risk management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or related engineering discipline.
  • 8–12 years of progressive engineering experience in water and/or wastewater systems.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex capital projects with responsibility for scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Strong knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes and regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to support field and construction activities.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred or required.
  • Experience working for or with water and wastewater utilities.
  • Experience with alternative project delivery methods such as design-build or CMAR.
  • Experience supporting regulatory inspections, compliance actions, or consent-driven projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead planning, design, and execution of complex water and wastewater projects from concept through commissioning and closeout.
  • Serve as Project Manager or Owner’s Representative on major projects with significant cost, schedule, regulatory, or operational risk.
  • Develop and control project scopes, budgets, schedules, procurement strategies, and risk mitigation plans.
  • Manage consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure quality, constructability, and contract compliance.
  • Identify, evaluate, and resolve technical, schedule, and cost risks proactively.
  • Provide senior-level engineering judgment on projects impacting drinking water quality, wastewater effluent quality, treatment processes, and distribution or collection system performance.
  • Lead or support projects related to treatment upgrades, regulatory compliance, corrosion control, source water protection, and system optimization and any and all aspects of water infrastructure design and construction.
  • Collaborate closely with water quality, compliance, and operations teams to ensure project decisions support safe, reliable, and compliant operations.
  • Support investigation and resolution of water quality events, including root cause analysis and development of corrective project solutions.
  • Ensure project designs and execution comply with applicable federal, state, and local water and wastewater regulations.
  • Lead or support permitting strategies and regulatory coordination for complex projects.
  • Provide technical support during inspections, audits, enforcement actions, or regulatory negotiations related to assigned projects.
  • Communicate clearly with internal leadership regarding compliance drivers, regulatory risk, and project impacts.
  • Contribute to capital planning, prioritization, and long-term infrastructure improvement strategies.
  • Support development and application of engineering standards, specifications, and project delivery best practices.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and project staff.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency, standardization, and continuous improvement across the engineering organization.
