About The Position

UFG is hiring a Sr Production Underwriter for its Southwest Region. This multi-line, multi-industry role is responsible for attracting and underwriting middle market business, managing accounts, and building strong agency relationships. The underwriter executes underwriting strategy to achieve profit and premium plans and handles an assigned renewal book in their territory. The role also supports resolution of escalated issues and mentors and coaches team members. The position is fully remote, with the ideal candidate residing in or around Dallas, Houston, Abilene, Midland, or Amarillo, Texas. Travel is required according to the assigned book of business and territory. The work is conducted under general office conditions, with remote, in-person, and hybrid options determined by the manager. The base salary range is $135,000–$185,000 annually. UFG also offers annual incentive compensation, insurance coverage, retirement plans with employer contributions, time off, and programs supporting employee well-being and financial security.

Requirements

At least 5 years of commercial lines underwriting experience preferred.
Advanced risk evaluation skills and knowledge of insurance contracts.
Ability to execute underwriting strategy for an assigned territory and make effective underwriting decisions.
Leadership skills, including the ability to mentor, coach, and train.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize and complete work efficiently.
Excellent customer service skills.
Ability to manage stakeholders and establish trust with internal and external partners.
Analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detailed accuracy.
Advanced communication and negotiation skills.
Strong time-management skills and ability to meet deadlines and effective dates.

Driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record required.

Nice To Haves

Four-year college degree preferred.
Completion of or progress toward AU, CIC, and/or CPCU designations preferred.

Responsibilities

Profitably underwrite complex new and renewal business through risk selection, pricing, contractual integrity, and account management, in accordance with delegated authority and regulatory requirements.
Assess risks, identify exposures and controls, price risks appropriately, and set terms and conditions that support a profitable portfolio.
Document assigned files and underwriting rationale.
Serve as a subject matter expert for team members handling complex risks.
Manage the portfolio to achieve profit and premium plans for prescribed business unit strategies.
Achieve production goals within the assigned territory.
Market UFG through in-person and virtual sales calls with agencies and insureds.
Prospect and develop a pipeline of new business opportunities.
Develop and maintain successful relationships with producers and agencies.
Represent UFG in the marketplace by communicating the company’s underwriting, risk control, and claims capabilities across business units.
Collaborate with underwriting, sales and distribution, underwriting center and support, risk control, legal, claims, and other internal partners.
Complete agency reviews, identify market opportunities, and provide management with feedback on the marketplace, agencies, and competition.
Mentor and train team members, answer questions, resolve escalated issues, and provide guidance.
Represent the field underwriter perspective in corporate initiatives and projects.
Support and participate in deploying technical underwriting training and content.
