Sr. Process Systems Engineer

Nucor•Lower Saucon Township, PA

About The Position

Universal Industrial Gases, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nucor, is seeking a Senior Process Systems Engineer to serve as the technical owner for Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for cryogenic air separation projects. The engineer will develop, own, and maintain P&IDs from initial concept through detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, and final as-built documentation. Direct experience with cryogenic Air Separation Units (ASUs) producing oxygen, nitrogen, and argon is strongly preferred. The role is accountable for ensuring P&IDs translate process design intent into safe, operable, maintainable, and constructible process systems. It leads P&ID coordination among process, mechanical, piping, instrumentation and controls, safety, suppliers, construction, commissioning, and operations. The engineer will also establish P&ID standards, mentor engineers and designers, participate in process safety reviews, and support project execution through startup, performance testing, and troubleshooting. UIG is based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and owns and operates production plants across the United States that supply oxygen, nitrogen, and argon to Nucor steel sites and third-party clients around the clock, as well as exporting liquid cryogenic products by road tanker. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screening that includes urine and hair follicle testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of process or process systems engineering experience.
  • At least 5 years of substantial hands-on P&ID development experience, beyond review or approval responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience taking P&IDs through at least two major project phases, such as conceptual design, detailed engineering, construction/IFC, commissioning, or as-built.
  • Experience serving as P&ID owner, lead developer, or responsible process engineer on at least one significant industrial process project.
  • Ability to develop P&IDs for complete process systems, including equipment, piping, valves, instrumentation, controls, safeguards, relief systems, vents, drains, and utility interfaces.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary P&ID reviews and resolving comments across engineering disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid flow, heat transfer, process equipment, process controls, hydraulics, and process safety.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening, including urine and hair follicle testing.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of direct experience developing P&IDs for cryogenic ASUs or industrial gas facilities.
  • Demonstrated P&ID ownership for at least one ASU project from detailed design through commissioning or as-built status.
  • Experience with oxygen, nitrogen, and argon systems, cryogenic distillation, brazed aluminum heat exchangers, molecular sieve purification, compressors, expanders, and cryogenic pumps.
  • Familiarity with applicable ASME, API, CGA, NFPA, OSHA/PSM, IEC, and ISA requirements and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical owner and primary engineering authority for project P&IDs, maintaining technical integrity and consistency throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Personally develop and direct P&ID development from conceptual design through detailed design, IFC/construction, commissioning, redlines, and final as-built status.
  • Translate PFDs, heat and material balances, equipment requirements, operating philosophies, and process design criteria into complete P&IDs.
  • Define piping, equipment, isolation, bypass, vent, drain, relief, instrumentation, control, alarm, trip, shutdown, and safeguarding requirements.
  • Lead formal multidisciplinary P&ID reviews and resolve comments and technical interfaces.
  • Incorporate vendor information, HAZOP/PHA actions, design changes, field modifications, and commissioning discoveries into controlled P&ID revisions.
  • Perform field walkdowns and reconcile engineering drawings against installed systems to support accurate as-built documentation.
  • Establish and maintain P&ID standards, symbology, design conventions, checklists, and quality requirements.
  • Mentor engineers and designers in P&ID development and review.
  • Participate in or lead HAZOP/PHA and other process safety reviews.
  • Support equipment specification, technical bid evaluation, vendor reviews, construction, commissioning, startup, performance testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards.
