Sr Principal Engineer Software – SW Architect (26-461) Space AHT

Northrop Grumman•Huntsville, AL
•$135,800 - $203,600•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration is hiring an NG-only Sr. Principal Engineer, Software – SW Architect to support the Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program in Huntsville, Alabama. The role is part of the C2BMC software architecture team on the Regional Applications Agile Release Train (RA ART) and requires on-site work; remote work and relocation assistance are not available. The position requires an active Secret clearance and an active Government-issued 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher at application and start. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance. C2BMC is a missile defense operational system that enables U.S. leadership and combatant commanders to plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor battles, and control networked sensors and weapon systems. As a member of the RA ART architecture team, the candidate will refine and oversee the evolution of the Java-based Regional C2BMC software architecture in alignment with program design tenets. The role provides technical support to RA ART leadership, coordinates with RA Product Teams and other ARTs and RMAs, and helps ensure architectural consistency across the program. The position involves maintaining architecture artifacts, assessing proposed software changes, coordinating with software and system architects, and supporting customer briefings and demonstrations. The architect also supports cyber requirements, applies modern software architecture patterns, and helps use automation and CI/CD pipelines to enforce standards and improve quality and test repeatability. Occasional travel is required, estimated at 10% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field and 8 years of experience; or a related master’s degree and 6 years of relevant experience; or 12 years of relevant experience may be considered in place of a degree.
  • Current, active Government-issued 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher at application and start; the candidate must maintain the certification throughout the contract period.
  • Current, active, in-scope Government-issued Secret clearance at application and start, with the ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI clearance.
  • Software engineering and architecture experience on large software systems.
  • Experience developing architecture and design changes for large-scale distributed software systems while accounting for software quality factors such as reliability, integrity, usability, and testability.
  • Experience performing logical and physical modeling of complex software systems.
  • Experience with Java and the full software development lifecycle, from initial design through development, testing, and fielding.
  • Familiarity with Information Assurance and cybersecurity principles, static and dynamic security assessment tools, STIGs, and secure system architecture.
  • Understanding of scalable, maintainable, and event-driven software architecture paradigms.
  • Knowledge and experience with virtualization, containerization, and orchestration; development and/or deployment in cloud-based environments; and application of AI agents.
  • Ability to apply automation and CI/CD pipelines to enforce standards, drive quality, and support test repeatability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work independently in a highly dynamic environment and represent C2BMC to senior MDA customers.
  • Self-starter able to initiate research and clearly document results.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Active, in-scope Government-issued Top Secret/SCI clearance at application is highly desired.
  • Previous experience with missile defense and command-and-control systems, especially in an agile environment.
  • Experience developing and coordinating architecture and defining relationships between internal and external components.
  • Experience communicating architectural intent and constraints to customers, developers, engineers, subject-matter experts, and users.
  • Experience with Test Driven Design (TDD) methodology.
  • Experience on large DoD or similarly complex systems programs with geographically dispersed teams.
  • Prior experience with the C2BMC program or similar Missile Defense Agency systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and maintain RA ART software architecture artifacts in support of planned C2BMC functionality updates.
  • Assess the impact of proposed software changes on C2BMC software architecture baselines.
  • Work with program software and system architects to align RA ART updates with enterprise architecture, intent, and guidance.
  • Support customer briefings, presentations, and demonstrations at Technical Interchange Meetings, quarterly reviews, and similar events.
  • Support the analysis, design, and implementation of cyber requirements for Regional C2BMC software.
  • Coordinate with RA Product Teams and other ARTs and RMAs to maintain architectural consistency, traceability, and alignment with program-level design principles.
  • Apply modern software architecture paradigms, including scalable, maintainable, and event-driven patterns, to guide system evolution.
  • Support automation and CI/CD pipelines to enforce standards, improve quality, and support repeatable testing.
  • Communicate architectural intent and constraints to customers, developers, engineers, subject-matter experts, and users.
  • Perform other program tasks required to support C2BMC mission objectives.
