About The Position

BNSF is committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as the well-to-wheel GHG emissions associated with our locomotives, 30% by 2030 (from a baseline year of 2018). Rail is already the most fuel-efficient form of land transportation, more than three times as fuel-efficient as trucks, and BNSF is investing to push our emissions reductions even further. This air quality and carbon manager position is a unique opportunity to work with a diverse team of subject-matter experts across the organization to understand and advise on emissions issues impacting the business. In this position, you will work on criteria pollutant & carbon emissions calculations, policy, mitigation and grant programs. You will also work on future innovation projects related to next generation locomotive technologies, facility electrification, and other future innovations. You will work on projects that have visibility across the organization and at parent company Berkshire Hathaway. The ideal candidate will have railroad and/or other transportation experience, as well as technical expertise related to criteria pollutants and GHG emissions, as they relate to rail transportation.

Requirements

  • 5 plus years of experience related to the above duties & responsibilities
  • Commitment to safety, and sustainable growth, innovation, and compliance
  • Excellent critical listening and clear communication
  • Demonstrated collaborator with experience working inter-departmentally and with external stakeholders on strategic issues
  • Ability to handle multiple complex and challenging assignments and projects in a timely and efficient manner. Solid self- and task-management experience and capabilities, with project management experience desirable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% of the time and/or based on business need

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering or science preferred
  • Advanced degree desirable
  • Familiarity with GHG Protocol and reporting, particularly in the transportation space
  • Familiarity with lifecycle assessment (LCA), especially as it relates to fuels
  • General knowledge of air quality health risk assessments (HRAs) and application of HRAs to facility permitting and exposure analysis
  • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and diplomatically with Federal and State agencies, as well as industry peers

Responsibilities

  • Managing regulatory compliance activities related to mobile source emissions reporting
  • Managing and collaborating with internal teams on annual GHG emissions reporting (including validation), including further developing strategies for managing scope 3 emissions sources
  • Managing criteria pollutant emissions modeling, including selecting consultants, overseeing their work, and communicating to internal stakeholders
  • Identifying and managing Federal and State incentive funding opportunities that further BNSF’s innovation priorities, including development and implementation of grant strategies
  • Collaborating with internal teams to advocate for BNSF in legislation, agency rulemaking and proceedings at the Federal and State level
