Sr Mechanical Engineer

Johnson Controls•New Freedom, PA
•$85,000 - $110,000

About The Position

Provides mechanical engineering and structural analysis support for commercial and industrial HVAC products, primarily water- and air-cooled chillers, including screw compressor- and centrifugal compressor-based platforms. The role supports product development, warranty, sales, and pressure vessel manufacturing, and typically participates in several cross-functional product development teams. It performs ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and related design calculations and requires a good understanding of pressure vessel standards and stress analysis techniques. Experience with finite element analysis tools is desired. The engineer analyzes and optimizes chiller components, supports ASME pressure vessel certification and Canadian Pressure Vessel Registration (CRN), develops pressure vessel field modification procedures, coordinates bi-yearly updates to ASME pressure vessel calculations, reviews patents and technical papers, and conducts root-cause analysis for warranty and service cases. The role also provides technical leadership, mentorship, and training to developing engineers. Some travel is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least 4 years of experience in ASME pressure vessel or heat exchanger design.
  • Good understanding of applicable pressure vessel design and test standards, including ASME, CSA, PED, API, and TEMA.
  • Familiarity with other applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE-15, ASCE-7, ASME B31, ASME PCC, NBIC, UL 207, and UL 60335-2-40.
  • Experience using finite element analysis (FEA), particularly ANSYS Mechanical or an equivalent tool.
  • Knowledge of pressure vessel and/or equipment manufacturing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly for design reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work with a team of engineers on fast-paced projects and understanding of the product development process (PDP).
  • Applicants for US employment must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require visa sponsorship for employment authorization in the United States and with Johnson Controls.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience in the HVAC industry.
  • Knowledge of analysis software, particularly ANSYS and Compress.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), and/or C#.
  • Experience with MATLAB and Simulink.
