About The Position

The Sr Mechanical Engineer is a mid-career mechanical design engineer supporting sustaining programs for KLA’s RAPID legacy systems, which remain in high-volume manufacturing. The role focuses on addressing obsolescence and supporting the design, fabrication, and performance characterization of opto-mechanical modules, precision mechanical mechanisms, mechanical packaging, racks and chassis, and mechatronic systems. The engineer will develop technical relationships with vendors and may progressively take ownership of the design process, from requirements specification and feasibility studies through analysis, conceptual and detailed design, design reviews, prototype procurement and testing, system integration, and handoff to manufacturing. The role also involves taking projects from design concept through manufacturing build and resolving issues throughout product phases. Design work may involve precision mechanisms, ultra-high-vacuum systems, opto-mechanical design, vibration isolation, and electronic packaging.

Requirements

  • Doctorate (Academic) degree with 0 years of related work experience; or Master's degree with 3 years of related work experience; or Bachelor's degree with 5 years of related work experience.
  • Proficiency in 3D solid modeling CAD.
  • Good understanding of physics and mechanics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working with engineering, manufacturing, and new product introduction team members in a concurrent environment.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Familiarity with mechanical manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, and welding.

Nice To Haves

  • ProE/Creo experience is preferred.
  • Skills in finite element analysis, creep and stress relaxation, and modal analysis.
  • Experience or skills in precision mechanisms, ultra-high-vacuum systems, opto-mechanical design, vibration isolation, and electronic packaging.

Responsibilities

  • Support sustaining programs for RAPID legacy systems, with obsolescence as a key driver.
  • Support the design, fabrication, and performance characterization of opto-mechanical modules, precision mechanical mechanisms, mechanical packaging, racks and chassis, and mechatronic systems.
  • Build technical relationships with vendors.
  • Develop and, as appropriate, own the design process, including requirements specification, feasibility studies, analysis, conceptual and detailed design, design review presentations, prototype-part procurement, prototype testing, system integration, and handoff to manufacturing.
  • Take projects from design concept through manufacturing build and address issues throughout product phases.
  • Create designs involving precision mechanisms, ultra-high-vacuum systems, opto-mechanical design, vibration isolation, and electronic packaging.
  • Develop understanding and application of tolerance analysis, GD&T, error budgeting, and requirements flow-up and flow-down.
  • Perform thermal analysis, including heat transfer, temperature gradients, thermal transients, and thermo-elastic analysis.
  • Support component fabrication, manufacturing process transfer, and qualification through vendor relationships.
  • Select materials and resolve fabrication methods.
  • Perform mechanical design, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with engineering, manufacturing, and new product introduction team members in a concurrent environment.
