Sr. Exploration Geoscientist

Repsol•Houston, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

Repsol is seeking a Sr. Exploration Geoscientist to join the Exploration Americas HUB team, based onsite at the office in The Woodlands, Texas. The role identifies, evaluates, and matures hydrocarbon exploration opportunities by integrating geophysical and geological information, primarily seismic and well data. The successful candidate will be a technically self-sufficient explorationist with a proven track record, able to generate and mature drillable prospects independently, provide technical assurance, resolve complex subsurface challenges, and transfer critical knowledge across the organization.

Requirements

  • Fully authorized to work for any employer in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future; employment under OPT/CPT/F1 visa programs is not authorized.
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field.
  • At least 15 years of relevant experience in hydrocarbon exploration, covering both onshore and offshore projects.
  • Ability to perform highly complex geophysical studies and technically validate work conducted by project teams and external contractors.
  • Experience in lead and prospect generation, characterization, and maturation, including volumetric estimation and exploration risk assessment.
  • Advanced structural and stratigraphic seismic interpretation, integrating seismic and well data with geological models.
  • Strong expertise in quantitative geophysics, including rock physics, AVO/AVA analysis, seismic attributes, seismic inversion, and property estimation.
  • Experience identifying and evaluating DHIs using the SAAM methodology.
  • Ability to characterize and assess petroleum system elements and integrate them into prospect evaluation.
  • Proficiency in structural modelling, velocity analysis, and depth conversion.
  • Experience preparing exploration well proposals, providing G&G support for well design, monitoring drilling operations, and conducting post-drill evaluations.
  • Working knowledge of seismic acquisition, processing, and post-processing, with the ability to supervise projects and assess data quality against exploration objectives.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to communicate and defend technical interpretations and recommendations.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree.
  • Airborne gravity and magnetic data acquisition monitoring.
  • Coordination of VSP acquisition and seismic processing projects.
  • Geophysical support for field development planning.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct prospectivity screening to identify new exploration opportunities.
  • Apply rock physics, AVO/AVA analysis, seismic attributes, facies classification, and geobody extraction techniques.
  • Interpret and evaluate onshore and offshore leads and prospects.
  • Assess new blocks offered through licensing rounds and data rooms.
  • Perform advanced structural and stratigraphic seismic interpretation.
  • Integrate geophysical and geological information to build consistent subsurface and structural models.
  • Identify and evaluate DHIs using the SAAM methodology.
  • Apply seismic characterization, inversion, and property estimation to support prospect evaluation.
  • Conduct velocity analysis and depth conversion.
  • Assess petroleum system elements, estimate hydrocarbon volumes, and evaluate exploration risks.
  • Prepare technically substantiated exploration well proposals and provide G&G input to well design and planning.
  • Deliver real-time geophysical support during drilling and conduct post-drill evaluations.
  • Supervise borehole seismic activities and support VSP acquisition projects.
  • Contribute to development well proposals where required.
  • Monitor and provide technical support for 2D and 3D land and marine seismic acquisition and processing projects.
  • Coordinate seismic processing and post-processing activities.
  • Perform processing QC, including illumination studies, multiple attenuation, PSDM/RTM workflows, tomography updates, and mute picking.
  • Ensure seismic products are suitable for interpretation, characterization, and prospect evaluation.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations documenting interpretations, uncertainties, risks, and recommendations.
  • Present and defend exploration opportunities, prospect evaluations, and well proposals before technical and management stakeholders.
  • Communicate complex technical issues clearly and support technically informed decision-making.
  • Represent the Company, where appropriate, in technical forums, professional networks, and industry associations.
  • Contribute technical expertise to bids, licensing rounds, data rooms, and external technical evaluations.
