Sr. Embedded Software Engineer

Stratom•Broomfield, CO
•$120,000 - $160,000

About The Position

Stratom, Inc. is a mission-driven engineering company building autonomous and unmanned off-highway vehicles and related robotic systems for demanding real-world environments. Its work spans the full lifecycle of complex systems, from early concept and prototyping through fielded deployment, with a focus on transitioning platforms into production. The Senior Embedded Software Engineer works across architecture, implementation, hardware integration, and verification to develop vehicle-control software between autonomy systems and physical machines. The role owns embedded subsystems from architecture and interface definition through bring-up, testing, field deployment, and maintenance. Work includes defining task scheduling and data flow, implementing drivers and control logic on microcontroller-based targets, building test infrastructure, and helping define low-level safety mechanisms. The engineer collaborates with autonomy, electrical, mechanical, and systems teams to shape vehicle-control and autonomy integration and prepare embedded software for robust, verifiable, maintainable production deployment. The position is based in Louisville, Colorado, and requires access to information subject to ITAR and/or EAR export controls. Selected non-U.S. persons must meet eligibility requirements for access to export-restricted information. A DoD security clearance is not required at hire, but employees must maintain eligibility to obtain one.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of professional embedded software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, static analysis, and code quality tools.
  • Experience with CAN and SAE J1939.
  • Experience developing software in a Linux environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Python for test automation and engineering tools.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Selected non-U.S. persons must meet eligibility requirements for access to export-restricted information under ITAR and/or EAR.
  • Employees must maintain eligibility to obtain a DoD security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing and developing test infrastructure for safety-critical systems, including HIL/SIL environments and automated regression testing.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards such as MIL-STD-882E and ISO 26262.
  • Experience with structured development processes, including requirements traceability, verification, and validation.
  • Experience designing software for multiple hardware targets, including HAL design and cross-platform build systems.
  • Familiarity with coding standards such as MISRA C/C++.
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and CAN tools, and experience reading schematics.
  • Experience with ROS or ROS 2.
  • Experience with PID or vehicle control systems.
  • Experience deploying and supporting software across a fleet of autonomous vehicles or mobile robots.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded C and C++ software on microcontrollers running an RTOS for vehicle control, actuation, sensing, and autonomous system functions.
  • Develop and integrate peripherals and interfaces, including CAN, PWM, GPIO, SPI, I2C, UART, ADC, timers, and watchdogs.
  • Own embedded subsystem software architecture and design decisions, and lead design and code reviews.
  • Define and own the runtime architecture of embedded vehicle software, including task scheduling, inter-module data flow, and diagnostics.
  • Build unit, integration, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and system-level tests, and integrate them into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Lead embedded software bring-up on new vehicle platforms, including controller configuration, peripheral and network verification, and integration with sensors and actuators.
  • Triage issues and perform root cause analysis using system context, field observations, and log data.
  • Collaborate with autonomy and systems teams to define the vehicle-control and autonomy interface, including messaging, fault handling, and platform safety requirements.
  • Contribute to vehicle-level safety mechanisms for autonomous platforms, such as fault monitoring, emergency stop, and fail-safe behavior.
  • Mentor engineers and promote sound software and system safety practices across the team.
