About The Position

Technology Advancement Group (TAG) is a veteran-owned systems integrator based in Ashburn, Virginia. The company designs, builds, and integrates assured positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) hardware and software for the Department of Defense and its suppliers. TAG is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer to architect and develop software for next-generation PNT products. Reporting to the Technical Director, this engineer will lead architecture and development, evaluate and select processors and subsystems, write embedded software for single-core and multi-core processors, and integrate civilian and military GNSS receivers, IMUs, and other advanced sensors. The role works closely with hardware, systems, and test engineers and owns decisions from processor selection through shipped code. The engineer will customize and integrate Android OS for embedded devices and custom hardware, working in the Linux kernel, device drivers, hardware abstraction layer (HAL), and system services. The role includes board bring-up and BSP development, peripheral driver development and optimization, debugging issues from bootloaders through kernel panics and driver failures, tuning performance and power consumption, and implementing platform security such as secure boot, SELinux, and dm-verity. The engineer will also write code and state machines for 32-bit microcontrollers running bare metal, an RTOS, or Android. Work includes interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, MIPI, CAN, and USB; GPIOs and interrupts; wireless technologies including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and ISM-band radios; and power management involving power islands and states, core switching, and dynamic clocking. The position is based in Ashburn. On-site work is preferred, and a hybrid schedule is possible. Applicants must qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR and be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; the posting states that clearance eligibility requires U.S. citizenship.

Requirements

  • Experience customizing and integrating Android or embedded Linux on custom hardware, including work in the kernel, device drivers, HAL, and system services.
  • Experience bringing up a new board and building or maintaining its BSP.
  • Experience debugging bootloader, kernel, and driver failures on real hardware.
  • Experience writing firmware and state machines for 32-bit microcontrollers on bare metal and on an RTOS.
  • Experience with SPI, I2C, UART, MIPI, CAN, USB, GPIOs, and interrupts, including handling timing and concurrency.
  • Experience evaluating and selecting processors or subsystems, or making major architecture decisions, for a product that shipped, with the ability to explain trade-offs.
  • Experience writing code for multi-core processors and optimizing performance and power using power states, core switching, or dynamic clocking, with measurements demonstrating results.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by ITAR: a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee admitted to the United States, or person granted asylum.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; the posting states that this requires U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating GNSS receivers, IMUs, or other navigation sensors; experience with a military receiver is especially desirable.
  • Understanding of how GNSS and inertial sensor data combine into position and time.
  • Experience integrating Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, or other ISM-band radios on an embedded device.
  • Experience implementing secure boot, SELinux policy, or dm-verity and maintaining device compliance through software updates.
  • A current U.S. government security clearance at any level.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop embedded software for next-generation PNT products.
  • Evaluate and select processors and subsystems, and make product architecture decisions.
  • Write embedded code for single-core and multi-core processors.

  • Customize and integrate Android OS on embedded devices and custom hardware.
  • Work in the Linux kernel, device drivers, HAL, and system services to achieve required platform performance, functionality, and hardware compatibility.
  • Lead board bring-up and BSP development.
  • Develop and optimize peripheral drivers, and debug low-level issues including bootloader, kernel, and driver failures.
  • Analyze and tune system performance and power consumption.
  • Implement platform security using secure boot, SELinux, and dm-verity.
  • Write firmware and state machines for 32-bit microcontrollers running bare metal, an RTOS, or Android.
  • Work with SPI, I2C, UART, MIPI, CAN, USB, GPIOs, and interrupts.
  • Integrate wireless links including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and ISM-band radios.
  • Manage power using power islands and states, core switching, and dynamic clocking.
  • Document root-cause findings and work directly with hardware, systems, and test engineers.
