About The Position

Flex is seeking a Sr. Director of EH&S and Sustainability to join their extraordinary team in Austin, TX. This role reports to the VP of EH&S and is responsible for mentoring, coaching, and directing site EH&S professionals to implement Corporate EH&S programs. The goal is to ensure regional operations comply with regulatory and corporate policies and to drive cultural change with high employee engagement. The Sr. Director will provide leadership and collaborate with EHS Leadership on the creation, implementation, and maintenance of best Corporate EH&S standards and programs.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) management, mandatory within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading EH&S programs and initiatives across multiple sites or locations in global capacity.
  • Experience in managing EHS compliance and regulatory matters, including OSHA regulations, EPA environmental requirements, and state/local safety standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations, including general industry and construction safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with EPA regulations and state-specific environmental laws.
  • Proven experience managing workers' compensation programs, including incident reporting, claim management, and loss control measures.
  • Understanding of the workers' compensation claims process and best practices for injury management and prevention.
  • Experience interacting with insurance companies, including negotiating coverage, premiums, and managing claims related to workplace incidents.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management practices necessary for determining adequate insurance coverage for EH&S liabilities.
  • Strong understanding of incident investigation techniques, root cause analysis, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Proficient in using EH&S management systems and software for reporting, tracking, and analysis of compliance metrics and incidents.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective training programs that raise employee awareness and understanding of safety hazards and compliance requirements.
  • Experience in coaching and leading cross-functional teams in safety practices and compliance.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey EH&S policies, procedures, and training effectively.
  • Capability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including executives, managers, and front-line employees.
  • Experience in developing and executing emergency response plans and conducting emergency drills.
  • Ability to handle and mitigate crises related to EH&S incidents efficiently.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data, identify trends, and make informed decisions related to safety and compliance performance.
  • Experience using data analytics to improve EH&S systems and processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar qualifications preferred.
  • Active participation in professional organizations related to safety, health, and environmental management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to overall EH&S excellence by providing strategic direction and technical expertise to initiatives aimed at improving EH&S performance while minimizing risks and liabilities across multiple disciplines, including industrial hygiene, machine safety, hazardous waste management, and environmental permitting.
  • Guide and mentor site EH&S professionals in executing compliance responsibilities, enhancing their skillsets, and building overall team capability.
  • Provide effective leadership and engage with each site to achieve best-in-class EH&S performance.
  • Collaborate with regional leadership to drive cultural change around EH&S, fostering high levels of employee engagement.
  • Implement and articulate EH&S goals, objectives, initiatives, policies, procedures, and key performance indicators across the region.
  • Build relationships with Business and Functional leaders to foster support for continuous EH&S improvement.
  • Collect, monitor, analyze, and evaluate metrics to measure the effectiveness of EH&S compliance and training programs, providing feedback to senior management.
  • Evaluate current EH&S maturity levels and develop a tactical plan for necessary EH&S programs.
  • Manage EH&S-related capital projects, including permitting and risk mitigation through engineering controls.
  • Support due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, as well as post-merger integration and real estate transactions.
  • Oversee a monitoring program to analyze workplace incidents and near misses, determining root causes and implementing corrective measures to eliminate hazards.
  • Execute safety strategies to reduce employee risk and promote a behavioral-based safety culture.
  • Assist in training and supporting leaders and teams in conducting root cause analyses and implementing corrective actions during safety incident investigations.
