About The Position

Corning is a world leader in glass, ceramic, and materials science, known for pushing technological boundaries. The Optical Communications segment has evolved into a comprehensive provider of optical solutions. This segment is divided into carrier network and enterprise network product groups, serving diverse communication infrastructure needs. The Equipment Design and Development Engineer will lead or participate in multi-disciplinary teams to prototype and pilot equipment designs for optical fiber manufacturing processes and products. This role involves designing, developing, improving, and industrializing Optical Fiber manufacturing platforms to enable new products with advanced attributes and reduced manufacturing costs. The engineer will translate understanding and experimental solutions into engineering requirements, and subsequently into process and/or equipment designs that meet performance criteria. Work is typically performed as part of a technology development team focused on improving manufacturing yields, process rates, machine utilization, product quality, environmental compliance, raw material yield, and/or energy usage.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, Materials Science or similar technical field (e.g. physics).
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in optical fiber process development or manufacturing environment.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience working with cross-functional teams (e.g., Electrical Controls, Chemicals, Material Science, etc.) and Materials processing within a manufacturing environment.
  • 3+ years of experience demonstrating working knowledge of physical phenomena (static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, optics, etc.) with a strong background in machine design or machine systems integration, and the ability to design and carry out experiments in lab and manufacturing environments.
  • 1+ year of experience with 3-D CAD software (AutoDesk Inventor preferred).

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge experience of Machine Controls (motion control, sensor technologies, PLC programming, etc…) and safety systems.
  • Proficient in DMAIC and MEE methodologies for problem solving.
  • Experience with data processing software (e.g. Jmp, Python, PowerBI) and MS Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Modeling simulation software optional (e.g. Aspen, Matlab, Fluent).

Responsibilities

  • Use established processes to identify concepts for manufacturing equipment, design, build and test selected concepts as an individual and in teams, and utilize risk management tools to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Designing and executing equipment validation test in a manufacturing plant; analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.
  • Collaborating with other equipment/machine design experts within and outside of OFC development organization.
  • Securing funding via appropriation requests and expense budgeting processes to support equipment design and development.
  • Communicating and documenting results and equipment designs.
