Sr Design / Product Development Engineer
About The Position
Abbott Point of Care is seeking a highly technical engineering lead for its Princeton, New Jersey location. The role supports research, development, and innovation for the i-STAT System and other products, influencing both technology strategy and execution. The i-STAT System is a portable diagnostic platform that provides rapid, lab-quality blood analysis results to support patient-care decisions. The position leads development and deployment of AI-enabled tools, software applications, automated test solutions, engineering workflows, and scalable system-integration approaches. It provides technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams and helps deliver product verification, validation, and global software releases while maintaining regulatory and quality standards. The engineer also works with customers and cross-functional stakeholders to turn customer feedback into product improvements, resolve complex technical and quality challenges, and guide technology adoption, product strategy, and long-term engineering direction.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent combined years of experience and education.
- 10 years of experience in medical device development and/or another highly regulated industry.
- Proven experience leading complex engineering, software, systems, or product development initiatives.
- Strong background in software development, system integration, automation, AI applications, or advanced engineering technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing technical teams and mentor engineers and technical contributors.
- Experience developing scalable testing, verification, validation, and automation strategies for complex products.
- Strong systems-thinking skills and ability to connect customer needs, technical solutions, and business objectives.
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills across engineering, product, quality, regulatory, and executive stakeholders.
- Passion for innovation, continuous improvement, and solving challenging technical problems.

Responsibilities
- Lead research, development, and innovation initiatives that support business growth and advance the technology roadmap.
- Drive the design, development, and deployment of AI-enabled tools, software applications, automated test solutions, and engineering workflows.
- Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams, mentor engineers, and foster continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Architect and implement scalable solutions for system integration, product verification and validation, and global software releases.
- Develop and execute test strategies, automated frameworks, and integration approaches that accelerate delivery while maintaining regulatory and quality standards.
- Partner with customers, product management, and engineering teams to translate Voice of Customer insights into products and enhancements.
- Lead root-cause investigations and resolution efforts for complex technical, manufacturing, and quality challenges.
- Drive adoption of emerging technologies, automation, and AI-driven solutions across R&D and other organizational functions.
- Influence product strategy, technology investments, intellectual property development, and long-term engineering direction.
- Collaborate with global stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and business leaders to ensure products meet customer, business, and compliance requirements.
