Sr Controls Software Engineer

Diamond Foundry•Bay Area, CA

About The Position

Diamond Foundry Inc. is seeking a software and systems engineer to develop and troubleshoot applications for its manufacturing line. The role works with custom-built and off-the-shelf equipment to improve data collection, operator input, and overall system efficiency. The engineer collaborates with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers, supports senior engineers, and takes responsibility for individual engineering projects. The position focuses on production Python code for equipment control and hands-on work on the shop floor, including wiring, testing, and physically troubleshooting hardware; it is not a cloud or web development role. The goal is to maximize production-line productivity by improving data collection, programming devices, automating workflows, and communicating with devices through different protocols. Systems may include inspection tools, CNC lasers, parts handlers, and CVD reactors. The role also involves collaborating with end users, training technicians, maintaining documentation, and sourcing components from software vendors when appropriate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a similar engineering discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience in systems engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Experience with electrical, software, and/or mechanical systems.
  • Strong communication and data presentation skills, including communicating data through text, graphics, and images to audiences with varying experience levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and fieldbus protocols such as PLC programming, TCP/IP, MQTT, IIoT, Modbus, RS232, SCADA, and motion control.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes or quality control systems.
  • Experience with data visualization tools or HMI (Human Machine Interface) development.
  • Familiarity with computer vision systems and image processing.
  • Experience in industrial automation environments and understanding of industrial networking protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the automation control team to design, upgrade, automate, and troubleshoot in-house and third-party systems, including inspection tools, CNC lasers, parts handlers, and CVD reactors.
  • Optimize control logic to improve equipment performance and minimize operator interaction time.
  • Collaborate with end users to translate feature requests into actionable software designs.
  • Build algorithms and models to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Train technicians on correct procedures and work with them to implement requested changes.
  • Organize and maintain documentation so others can understand and use it.
  • Write technical documentation for the design and use of equipment.
  • Source system components from software vendors where appropriate.
  • Develop and troubleshoot manufacturing-line applications, including programming equipment and physically wiring, testing, and troubleshooting hardware.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement savings plans, life insurance, and disability insurance programs.
  • Programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Employee discounts to VRAI.
  • Benefits begin as early as the first day of employment; medical and vision coverage are retroactive to the start date, while dental and voluntary benefits take effect after enrollment is completed.
