Sr. Calibration, Mapping & Localization Engineer

42dot•San Francisco, CA
•$200,000 - $300,000

About The Position

42dot is hiring a Senior Calibration, Mapping & Localization Engineer to build the calibration, mapping, and localization foundation for perception and planning models across a multi-vehicle fleet, including passenger vehicles, robotaxis, buses, and trucks. The role covers sensor calibration, mapping, localization, and the confidence and quality of their outputs. As an early member of a founding team, the engineer will help establish the team's sensor calibration methodology and tooling, mapping strategy and representation, drift-detection pipelines, and localization architecture and technical roadmap as the fleet scales. The position involves developing systems for factory and in-field use, supporting downstream teams, and diagnosing issues found through road and simulation testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in sensor calibration, SLAM, mapping, localization, or multi-sensor fusion.
  • Strong understanding of estimation theory, including Kalman filters, factor graphs, or optimization-based fusion.
  • Strong software engineering skills in C++ and/or Python.
  • Demonstrated ability to take difficult technical problems from ambiguity to successful deployment.
  • Track record of leading projects from concept through deployment.

Nice To Haves

  • Autonomous driving or robotics experience across multiple vehicle classes.
  • Experience with HD map creation and maintenance pipelines at scale.
  • Experience with LiDAR, camera, or radar extrinsic calibration in production vehicles.
  • Familiarity with functional safety requirements such as ISO 26262.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement sensor calibration systems for cameras, LiDAR, radar, and IMUs for factory and in-field use.
  • Build and maintain mapping pipelines, including map creation, versioning, and drift detection.
  • Develop and improve localization algorithms, including sensor fusion, odometry, and SLAM.
  • Define accuracy, latency, and reliability requirements for outputs used by downstream teams.
  • Build tools to validate calibration and localization quality at fleet scale.
  • Diagnose and resolve calibration and localization failures found during on-road and simulation testing.
  • Help shape calibration methodology and tooling, mapping strategy and representation, drift-detection pipelines, and localization architecture and roadmap.
