About The Position

The Sr. Assessment Designer – Spanish Language Arts serves as a subject matter expert in Spanish language assessment and contributes to the development of high-quality assessment content that meets technical, educational, and program requirements. The Sr. Assessment Designer is responsible for the development of assessment content, the execution of department processes and procedures, and monitoring progress against work plans. The Sr. Assessment Designer applies a high level of knowledge and skill in all phases of test development, including creating ancillary materials, item writing, review and evaluation, test assembly, facilitation of committee meetings, and scoring. In addition, the Sr. Assessment Designer provides content-area leadership, senior-level content reviews, training, project coordination, and approval of development deliverables.

Requirements

  • B.A. or B.S. in Education and/or a relevant field, such as Spanish, Linguistics, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in Spanish assessment item development
  • Knowledge and experience working with curriculum materials and standards
  • Content expertise in Spanish Language Arts and English Language Arts
  • Expertise in industry standards for assessment quality, especially in requirements for items and tests
  • Experience in assessment development processes for custom and off-the-shelf large-scale assessment products
  • Familiarity with research design, data analysis, psychometric concepts, and measurement principles
  • Ability to collaborate extensively with peers to accomplish goals
  • Familiarity with Agile processes
  • Ability to develop creative solutions to solve resource and schedule challenges
  • Translation/transadaptation (English to Spanish) and copyediting (Spanish) experience
  • Experience working in dual language education environments and/or with multilingual (Spanish/English) students
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English with the ability to speak and write fluently in both languages to communicate subject area expertise with internal and external audiences

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain high-quality assessment items/passages in accordance with assessment program needs, including supporting the development of items through their entire life cycle.
  • Align content to standards, frameworks, resources, and related documents and writing, editing, and reviewing items/passages against checklists, specifications, and style guides.
  • Contribute to the development of item specifications and process documentation, design of test blueprints, and evaluation of passage and item bank inventories.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in content areas and assessments when collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including facilitating meetings and other collaborative efforts with partners.
  • Help lead training for vendors, item writers, and educators to develop and review items/passages in accordance with HMH item development best practices.
  • Consult with program management on issues and concerns with projects, as appropriate, attending relevant meetings and tracking progress.
  • Contribute to the development of new test designs, item and test prototypes, and other innovative assessment ideas.
  • Apply understanding of Spanish literacy development, best practices in transadaptation, and assessment considerations for multilingual learners in item and assessment development, including attention to linguistic accuracy, register, and cultural appropriateness.
  • Support the facilitation of project launch meetings.
  • Lead some or all portions of development-specific project meetings.
  • Generate ideas for improving processes and procedures.
  • Help ensure required tasks are completed on schedule and within budget, such that the project adheres to all financial, legal, and organizational requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to understand and communicate decisions, impacts, progress, risks, and next steps.
  • Collaborate with other teams to support Scrum practices that enable successful work across the division, including large-scale assessment work and content connections across the wider HMH organization.
  • Help lead the training and mentoring of new and existing staff in areas of expertise.
  • Develop expertise in development-related tools, software, and processes, and communicate best practices to others.
  • Enact change within projects, ensuring that direction is carried out.
  • Communicate with the manager if additional intervention is needed.
