Under limited supervision, this role is responsible for the efficient collection of plasma by performing venipuncture and monitoring the pheresis process. The Sr Phlebotomist follows standard operating procedures (SOPs) to perform plasma collection procedures including donor set-up, venipuncture, monitoring and disconnect. This role evaluates vein performance and makes corrections to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety. The Sr Phlebotomist explains the screening process, health screening tests, the appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition and any other pertinent information to the donor. They maintain alertness to any reaction by donors and assist with reactions or notify appropriate staff. This role uses a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents such as machine alerts and alarms, volume variances and donor adverse events. They perform calibrations, verify equipment maintenance, and respond to complex equipment alarms or donor issues. The Sr Phlebotomist ensures the accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system. They follow all Health Safety and Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures. This role monitors donor flow on the donor floor to assure continuous turnover and alerts the Group Leader or Supervisor of donor flow issues.
