About The Position

The Sr Accounting Analyst performs general accounting processes to support accurate and timely accounting close cycles and the development of internal and external financial statements and reports. Work may include accounting entries, financial analysis, ledger and account reconciliations, inter-company billings, property valuations, regulatory reporting forms, and tax filings. The role supports month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities and may take the lead on analysis and reporting for business cycles. It also supports special projects, provides accounting and financial assistance to clients, prepares management and external-party reports, and consults on technical accounting and system matters. The analyst applies accounting and GAAP knowledge to resolve complex issues and may provide work direction and training to other analysts. Xcel Energy supports a hybrid work model. Many roles are expected to work onsite three days per week, Tuesday through Thursday, though expectations vary by role, team, and business needs.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
At least four years of general financial accounting and reporting experience, emphasizing complex accounting issues and processes and multiple-company accounting.
Intermediate to advanced skills with Microsoft Office applications.
Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply GAAP.
Demonstrated knowledge of business and legal principles, as well as analytical and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

CPA or CMA certification; certification may be required for some positions.
Knowledge of and experience working with SAP or PowerPlan.

Responsibilities

Support accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end accounting close cycles and the preparation of internal and external financial statements, regulatory reporting forms, and tax filings.
Analyze complex financial data and perform accounting processes such as account reconciliations, complex ledger entries, report preparation, settlement of inter-company receivables and payables, and property valuations.
Analyze financial data using appropriate methods and techniques to identify adverse trends and recommend solutions to mitigate financial impact.
Participate in or lead assigned special projects, including system upgrade or enhancement testing, rate case support, financial analysis, ad hoc reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
Provide timely and accurate assistance and consultation to clients in supported business areas, including interpreting account codes or financial reports, providing project status reports, and resolving work orders.
Prepare presentations, statistical reports, schedules, and other information about operating results for management and outside parties.
Consult with co-workers, clients, and management on technical accounting or system-related matters.
Stay current with new or proposed local, state, and federal rules and regulations, as well as internal and external financial reporting requirements.
Apply a broad understanding of accounting and GAAP practices to resolve complex issues.
May provide work direction and training to other analysts.
May lead the accurate and timely analysis and reporting of various business cycles.
