About The Position

This role involves driving on-track performance improvements by guiding long-term vehicle development and providing specific vehicle configuration, setup, and strategy recommendations to race teams. The engineer will perform analysis in areas such as vehicle dynamics, simulation model correlation, data interpretation from various sources (on-track, rig-test, DIL), methods development, and competitor analysis. The position requires maintaining relationships with race teams, traveling to events, and collaborating with internal GM motorsports groups. A key aspect is continuously improving GM Motorsports program tools, analysis methods, and vehicle dynamics understanding through prototyping new solutions, validating improvements, and working with the software team to implement changes in production tools. The role will implement simulation and data analysis methods to develop race-winning solutions, including setup refinement, pre/post-event reports, conceptual studies, competitor analysis, and race strategy optimization. Findings and recommendations must be clearly presented through reports and in-person follow-ups. This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days in-office and 2 days remote, with the ability to report to a local office.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Automotive Engineering, or related field of study.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Performance Engineer, Motorsports Engineer, or related role.
  • One (1) year of experience with top-level motorsports series including IndyCar, F1, NASCAR, IMSA, WEC, or similar.
  • One (1) year of experience with race car setup, event preparation, technical inspection, race procedures and race strategy.
  • One (1) year of experience with race engineering.
  • One (1) year of experience with simulation workflows in a professional motorsports organization including offline simulation and DIL.
  • One (1) year of experience using simulation tools to optimize vehicle performance.
  • One (1) year of experience programming in Python, MATLAB, and VBA.
  • One (1) year of experience analyzing on-track performance, defining performance metrics, and deriving actionable recommendations through application vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods.
  • One (1) year of experience with motorsports data analysis software including Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec, Bosch WinDarab, and AIM Race Studio.
  • One (1) year of experience with vehicle testing methods, sensor instrumentation, calibration and telemetry.
  • One (1) year of experience with data reduction for SPMM, 7-post, and on-track testing.
  • Must be able to report to local office.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in driving on-track performance improvements through guiding long-term vehicle development directions.
  • Provide event-specific vehicle configuration, setup, and strategy recommendations to supported race teams.
  • Perform analysis in vehicle dynamics, simulation model correlation and refinement, on-track, rig-test and DIL data reduction and interpretation, methods development, and competitor analysis.
  • Maintain relationships and alignment with supported race team personnel.
  • Travel to occasional race and test events.
  • Collaborate with internal GM motorsports groups.
  • Collaborate with GM supported teams and GM personnel to understand team objectives and contribute to a coordinated development effort.
  • Convey findings to all necessary groups.
  • Continuously strive to improve GM Motorsports program’s tools, analysis methods, and vehicle dynamics understanding.
  • Reimagine and prototype new and better solutions to common problems or questions.
  • Correlate existing methods and validate new improvements against track and test data.
  • Work with GM Software team to implement solutions in production tools.
  • Implement vehicle simulation and data analysis methods to develop race winning solutions.
  • Develop race-specific setup refinement.
  • Create pre and post-event reports distributed directly to race team personnel.
  • Conduct conceptual studies to guide big-picture development efforts.
  • Perform competitor analysis and event characterization.
  • Optimize race strategy.
  • Clearly present findings, recommendations, and analysis results through well organized and actionable reports and in-person follow-up.
