Sports Reporting Intern, Summer 2027
About The Position
The San Francisco Chronicle is seeking a reporting intern for the summer of 2027 to cover Bay Area sports teams and related issues. This paid, 12-week internship offers hands-on experience in covering a variety of stories, both in the office and in the field. Interns will receive training and mentoring, gaining a working knowledge of a modern digital news operation. The role will focus on breaking news and game-day stories, with opportunities for data-driven and enterprise stories based on the intern's interests and experience. The ideal candidate will be proactive in pursuing stories, engaging readers through social media, visuals, graphics, and alternative story forms. High standards, curiosity, empathy, and the ability to collaborate and provide/take feedback are essential.
Requirements
- All college students, including community college students or students who will have recently completed their associate or bachelor’s degree, are encouraged to apply.
- Strong writing skills are important.
- Strict dedication to accuracy, fairness and inclusiveness.
- Portfolio of work, along with brief explanations of your role in the execution of the pieces.
- Your role could include brainstorming, researching, art directing collaborators, project coordination, and design and coding.
Nice To Haves
- Strong college publication experience or previous internships preferred, but not required.
Responsibilities
- Receive training and mentoring from editors and colleagues across departments.
- Work and train within a cohort of more than a dozen summer interns.
- Report and write news articles for the Chronicle and SFChronicle.com that reflect the diversity of experiences and coverage of multiple sports teams in the Bay Area.
- Cover a variety of stories from the office and in the field.
- Pursue other topics, data-driven and enterprise stories depending on interest and experience.
- Engage readers through social media, visuals, graphics and alternative story forms.
- Hustle and compete to be first on a story.
