About The Position

The San Francisco Chronicle is seeking a reporting intern for the summer to cover Bay Area sports teams and related issues. This paid, 12-week internship offers hands-on experience in covering stories both in the office and in the field, alongside training and mentoring in modern digital news operations. The role will focus on breaking news and game-day stories, with opportunities for data-driven and enterprise reporting based on the intern's interests and experience. The ideal candidate will be proactive in pursuing stories, engage readers through social media and multimedia, and possess high standards, curiosity, empathy, and the ability to collaborate and provide/receive feedback.

Requirements

  • Full-time position.
  • Based in the Bay Area.
  • Paid at $20.50/hr.
  • Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required as news and games warrant.
  • This paid 12-week internship typically begins in June and lasts through August, but there is some flexibility to accommodate college schedules.
  • All college students, including community college students or students who will have recently completed their associate or bachelor’s degree, are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strict dedication to accuracy, fairness and inclusiveness.
  • Portfolio of work with brief explanations of the role in execution (brainstorming, researching, art directing collaborators, project coordination, design and coding).

Nice To Haves

  • Strong college publication experience or previous internships preferred, but not required.
  • Someone eager to find and chase good stories, while engaging readers through compelling headlines, visuals, graphics and other multimedia.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training and mentoring from editors and colleagues across departments.
  • Work and train within a cohort of more than a dozen summer interns.
  • Report and write news articles for the Chronicle and SFChronicle.com that reflect the diversity of experiences and coverage of multiple sports teams in the Bay Area. The candidate’s areas of interest will be taken into consideration for assignments.
