About The Position

The San Francisco Chronicle is seeking a reporting intern to join its food and wine journalists for the summer of 2027. This paid, 12-week internship will provide the intern with the opportunity to cover the Bay Area's dynamic dining and drinking scene, report on restaurant and bar openings/closings and other food/drink-related news, and learn about the operations of a modern digital newsroom. The role includes social media responsibilities, participation in team brainstorming, assisting critics with reporting, and opportunities to sample food and drink. The ideal candidate will be a hustler, engage readers through various media, possess high standards, curiosity, empathy, and be comfortable with collaboration and feedback.

Requirements

  • Full-time position, paid at $20.50/hr, based in the Bay Area for Summer 2027.
  • All college students, including community college students or students who will have recently completed their associate or bachelor’s degree, are encouraged to apply.
  • Deadline to apply is October 10, 2026.
  • Include in application a portfolio of work or links to designs, along with brief explanations of your role in the execution of the pieces.
  • Role could include brainstorming, researching, art directing collaborators, project coordination, and design and coding.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training and mentoring from editors and colleagues across departments.
  • Work and train within a cohort of more than a dozen summer interns.
  • Report and write news articles for the Chronicle and SFChronicle.com that reflect the diversity of experiences and coverage of the Bay Area’s restaurant, bar and winery scene.
  • Cover a variety of stories related to the Bay Area's dynamic dining and drinking scene.
  • Report on restaurant and bar openings and closings and other food- and drink-related news.
  • Learn the ins and outs of running a fast-paced food news operation.
  • Handle social media operations.
  • Participate in team brainstorming.
  • Assist esteemed critics with their on-the-ground reporting work.
  • Try new food and drink as part of the job.
