About The Position

Alameda is an island city of 78,000 located next to the city of Oakland and offers a full-service municipal recreation program. Neighborhood recreation programs are offered at ten locations throughout the city. Alameda’s Sports and Fitness Program provides year-round opportunities for residents of all ages to engage in active, healthy lifestyles through structured classes, leagues, and drop-in activities. Dynamic, ethical, and enthusiastic individuals who share our values are encouraged to apply! ARPD’s diverse sports and fitness offerings include youth and adult classes, seasonal leagues, clinics, camps, and special events. Activities include basketball, dance, football, golf, kayaking, martial arts, pickleball, softball, walking, and yoga. Programs are held at parks, gyms, waterfront areas, and community centers throughout Alameda. Leaders may assist with setup, instruction, supervision, and participant engagement. Special events such as tournaments, themed fitness nights, and community wellness days are scheduled regularly to promote active living and social connection.

  • Respectful & Inclusive Behavior: Treat participants, parents, and coworkers with kindness and respect. Support a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Activity Knowledge & Safety Awareness: Be comfortable leading or assisting with physical activities. Follow all safety protocols and be alert to potential hazards.
  • Responsibility with Children & Participants: Be a role model at all times – engaged, attentive, and encouraging.
  • Presentation & Professionalism: Wear the required uniform and maintain a neat appearance.
  • Commitment to Growth: Take part in staff development sessions, workshops, and in-service training. Strive to improve leadership, coaching, and customer service skills.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR.
  • A recent T.B. Test prior to the beginning of the program or agree to get both as a condition of being hired.
  • Must be 16 years or older.
  • Must provide documentation to establish both identity and work authorization, which includes showing a valid United States Social Security card at the time of hire (photocopies not accepted).

  • Volunteer or Recreation experience desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setup, instruction, supervision, and participant engagement.
  • Help support sports classes, camps, and special events as assigned.
  • Represent ARPD in a professional and friendly manner to the public.
