About The Position

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is hiring individuals for part-time, year-round positions within the Recreation Division. These roles include Parks Activities Specialist jobs such as Sports Official (ages 15+) and Lead Attendant: Event Host (ages 18+). The training pay for Parks Activities Specialist jobs is $19.61. The base pay for a Sports Official is $33.50 or $38.95, depending on their officiating grade level. A Lead Official earns a base pay of $38.95, with $40.12 for hours spent training and scheduling other staff. These positions are not represented by a Union. Portland Parks and Recreation is seeking basketball Sports Officials, aged 15 and older, for its 2026-2027 youth sports leagues. On-court training will cover basic officiating skills, and no prior experience is necessary. All Sports League Officials must complete the Portland Parks and Recreation Sports Officials Training Certification Program. This training spans seven weeks on Saturdays from 8:45 am to 12:00 pm, from mid-October to December, includes two live game training Jamborees, and a post-season training in March. Sports League Staff are responsible for officiating games safely and professionally. Applicants should exhibit leadership, teamwork, and demonstrate active participation and enthusiasm on the court, serving as a positive role model for all participants and staff. New Sports Officials will only be compensated for training after the hiring process is finalized. The Saturday Youth Basketball Season runs from January 9, 2027, to mid-March 2027. This job is open for an extended period, and applicants will be contacted as positions become available. Applications submitted after September 21st will be considered for interviews on an as-needed basis. This is a casual, part-time job posting for multiple positions classified by the City of Portland as Parks Activities Specialists. Requirements

  • Must be at least 15 years old to be a Sports Official.
  • Must be at least 18 years old to be a Lead Sports Official.
  • Knowledge of current league rules and of the National High School Federation (NHFS) rules (for Lead Officials).
  • Ability to travel from site to site of the assigned area.
  • Must be able to travel to trainings, staff meetings and game sites (for Lead Officials).

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience mentoring officials is preferred (for Lead Officials).
