Emerson College seeks an entrepreneurial sports industry leader and/or scholar to join its nationally recognized Sports Communication program in the Department of Communication Studies. The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and leaders from across the college to build a premier interdisciplinary academic center in the School of Communication, positioning Emerson as a leading destination for the study and advancement of sports leadership, management, communication, media, culture, and civic life. Rooted in Emerson's mission to educate extraordinary communicators and creators, the successful candidate will teach and mentor in its nationally recognized sports communication program, preparing students to lead in the rapidly-growing global sports ecosystem. The appointment begins August 19, 2027, with a mandatory two-day orientation, August 19 and 20, 2027. Professionals and/or academics with a distinguished record of leadership or scholarship in the sports industry are encouraged to apply, with hands-on experience in leadership and management, communication and public relations, and/or fandom and community engagement preferred. The successful candidate will show evidence of effective collaboration and the ability to engage with leaders internally and externally to build local, national, and global partnerships to support sports industry-related experiential learning and programming. In addition to developing an academic center focused on sports leadership, management, communication, and media, the candidate will advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Supporting the theory-practice mission of the Department of Communication Studies, the candidate will have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning with Boston sports teams and programs, and outside Boston with the Washington, D.C. Program, Emerson LA, other teams and leagues, and civic engagement projects. Communication Studies is the first Communication department established in the United States, created at Emerson’s founding in 1880. Its 146-year legacy of nationally recognized leadership in teaching, practicing, and applying the power of communication is the foundation for its undergraduate and graduate programs in Sports Communication; Political Communication: Leadership, Politics and Social Advocacy; and Public Relations. It also offers an undergraduate major in Communication Studies and a graduate program in Digital Communication Leadership. Emerson College is the nation’s only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to undergraduate majors and master’s degrees in communication, arts, and media.
