About The Position

The Sport Operations and Equipment Manager is responsible for the independent coordination, management, and execution of sport operations and equipment services for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation. This position provides operational leadership and administrative oversight in the areas of game and event management, facility and competition operations, equipment services, inventory control, purchasing coordination, laundry operations, and student worker supervision. This position exercises discretion and independent decision-making in the coordination of athletic contests, equipment operations, facility preparation, event logistics, scheduling support, and student worker supervision. The position plays a key role in maintaining efficient daily operations and delivering a high-quality experience for student-athletes, staff, officials, and visitors. Working collaboratively with coaches, athletic administrators, facilities personnel, campus partners, officials, and external vendors, the Sport Operations and Equipment Manager exercises independent judgment in establishing operational priorities, resolving logistical challenges, and ensuring successful support for varsity athletics and departmental events. The Sport Operations and Equipment Manager collaborates effectively across departments, proactively identifies operational needs, and contributes to the continuous improvement of departmental systems and processes. The position requires strong organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of professionalism, initiative, and attention to detail. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working in collegiate athletics is required.
  • Experience in athletic operations, event management, equipment operations, coaching, or a combination of related responsibilities preferred.
  • Experience supporting athletic events, managing operational logistics, supervising student staff, and working collaboratively within a collegiate athletics environment is highly desirable.
  • Experience with NCAA game operations, athletic facilities, and equipment room management is preferred.
  • Experience with football equipment operations, fitting, maintenance, and inventory management is strongly preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy is required to drive College-owned vehicles.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications, or the ability to obtain certification upon hire is required.
  • Ability to operate effectively both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic collegiate athletics environment.
  • Must possess an understanding of the role of athletics within a highly selective liberal arts college environment and commitment to supporting the educational experience of student-athletes.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records, manage operational data, and uphold confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive information.

  • An Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) certification preferred, or must be attained within the first 12 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate all aspects of game day operations, event management, and venue staging for assigned athletic contests, championship events, camps, and special events.
  • Execute sport- and facility-specific event management policies, procedures, and operational protocols to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality competitive environments.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of event management plans for CMS, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), and NCAA athletic contests and championships.
  • Train, schedule, and supervise student workers and operations staff supporting game management, facility operations, and event execution.
  • Coordinate operational logistics for home competitions, including facility setup and breakdown, event timelines, staffing plans, team bench areas, officials’ accommodations, spectator services, and operational support spaces.
  • Serve as a primary operational liaison for visiting teams, officials, campus partners, vendors, and event personnel regarding schedules, facility access, transportation logistics, practice availability, and event operations.
  • Coordinate with officials and game personnel regarding schedules, payment procedures, operational needs, and contest administration.
  • Determine and coordinate event staffing and operational support needs, including campus safety, security, crowd management, and emergency response preparation as appropriate for athletic events and special programs.
  • Monitor field, venue, and facility conditions and assist in operational decision-making related to contest readiness, weather considerations, postponements, or cancellations.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, SCIAC, institutional, and departmental policies and procedures related to athletic event operations and facility management.
  • Monitor the daily operations of athletic facilities and event spaces to help ensure proper maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness.
  • Inspect operational and competition areas regularly and identify and communicate facility, equipment, or event-related concerns requiring attention or follow-up.
  • Evaluate and respond independently to event and facility-related issues in a timely, professional, and solution-oriented manner.
  • Assist with facility operations, including field lining, equipment setup, arena conversions, bleacher and floor installations, and other operational preparations as assigned.
  • Contribute to the assessment and improvement of departmental operational systems, workflows, and event management practices to enhance efficiency and service quality.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation operations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Equipment Operations to manage the daily operations of the two athletics equipment rooms, including equipment issuance, collection, maintenance, repair coordination, storage, and inventory management for varsity athletic programs.
  • Coordinate equipment preparation and fulfillment for practices, competitions, team travel, camps, postseason events, and special programs.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and assist with purchasing coordination, vendor communication, equipment replacement planning, and budget tracking.
  • Oversee laundry operations and establish efficient systems and workflows to support departmental and team needs.
  • Ensure athletic apparel, uniforms, and equipment are maintained in a safe, clean, functional, and professional manner consistent with departmental standards.
  • Monitor equipment usage and operational needs and make independent recommendations regarding replacement, repair, organization, and process improvements.
  • Maintain organized, secure, and efficient equipment storage and operational workspaces.
  • Coordinate equipment-related support for visiting teams, officials, and hosted events as needed.
  • Oversee and mentor student workers assigned to the equipment room and laundry operations.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable safety standards and operational procedures related to athletic equipment management and usage.
  • Support long-range planning and operational improvements related to equipment systems, inventory controls, and departmental efficiency.
