About The Position

The Sponsor Coverage team leads Citi Commercial Bank’s coverage of middle market financial sponsors. The team serves as the central point of coordination for all Commercial Bank sponsor activity, with core priorities that include originating and executing bank capital financings for sponsor-backed portfolio companies, expanding engagement with sponsors across industries and geographies, driving penetration of Treasury & Trade Solutions and Markets products, and partnering with Citi’s Financial Institutions group to deliver GP- and fund‑level TTS, Markets, and financing solutions. The Sponsor Coverage Associate plays a critical execution role within this framework, with a primary focus on the underwriting and approval of financing transactions. Associates work closely with senior Sponsor Coverage bankers to originate new opportunities, lead detailed credit and financial analysis, and manage transactions through Citi’s internal credit approval process.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in banking or finance
  • Strong financial statement analysis, credit assessment, and financial modeling skills
  • Working knowledge of leveraged finance, sponsor-backed transactions, and corporate banking products
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously
  • SIE, Series 63 & 79 licenses (or ability to obtain)

Responsibilities

  • Work with Sponsor Coverage bankers to lead the credit underwriting and approval process for capital commitments to sponsor-owned portfolio companies and select fund-level financing opportunities
  • Build, maintain, and sensitize detailed financial models assessing cash flow, leverage, liquidity, and enterprise value
  • Work with senior bankers and internal partners to prepare transaction-related materials and credit approval memos to support client pitches and internal approvals
  • Conduct in-depth financial, industry, and economic analysis to evaluate transaction risk and support credit conclusions
  • Work with industry coverage teams and Risk partners to originate and screen new opportunities for strategic fit, credit quality, and target market alignment
  • Support transaction structuring and diligence execution to ensure timely responses on financing opportunities and other client inquiries
  • Assist with ongoing portfolio monitoring and credit-related responsibilities post-closing
