About The Position

The Speech Instructor will teach in-person courses in speech and communication-related areas, such as Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication. Teaching assignments may include teaching at off-site locations, evening courses, and teaching via alternative delivery systems, such as online. The role involves planning, implementing, and sponsoring appropriate activities to supplement instruction. Responsibilities include assisting in textbook selection, curriculum development/revision/updating, completing reports, and tracking/entering assessment data. The instructor will maintain evaluation and attendance records, stay current with teaching methods and course development, and participate in faculty development activities. Maintaining confidentiality in a student-centered environment and incorporating study skills, adult learning theory, and teaching/learning strategies to improve student persistence and retention are key aspects of the role. Establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with staff, students, faculty, and other stakeholders is essential. The position may involve advising prospective and enrolled students, serving on institutional committees, mentoring honors students, and sponsoring co-curricular activities like the Communications Club. The instructor must comply with college policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required in speech communication or related field.
  • Evidence of effective public speaking and communications teaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • Willingness to participate in recruitment activities for the Speech Communication area of study and the Department in general.
  • Maintain confidentiality in a student-centered environment.
  • Follow written and oral instructions accurately, be attentive to detail, and work independently.
  • The ability to collaborate with staff, faculty, and HutchCC stakeholders.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Understand words and respond effectively and appropriately.
  • Visual acuity to view a computer terminal.
  • Use appropriate judgment and to apply tact and courtesy in difficult situations.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend basic instructions about the position.

Responsibilities

  • Incorporate study skills, adult learning theory, and teaching/learning strategies to improve student persistence and retention.
  • Arrive on time for work, attend work regularly, and successfully complete the responsibilities of the position.
  • Comply with HutchCC policies, procedures, and the local Master Agreement.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with staff, students, faculty and other HutchCC stakeholders.
  • May advise prospective and enrolled students in the appropriate curricula.
