About The Position

Harvard-Westlake School is seeking an exceptional and highly qualified educator to serve as a school-wide Speech Coach and Middle School Public Speaking Teacher. This position, beginning in August for the 2026-27 school year, involves working with students across both the middle school (grades 7-9) and upper school (grades 10-12) campuses. The role requires the ability and interest to oversee separate middle and high school speech teams, demonstrating a passion for both coaching competitive speech and classroom teaching. The ideal candidate will be responsible for serving as the head coach for competitive speech teams, running effective after-school practice and training sessions, hiring and supervising assistant coaches, and traveling with team members to competitions. Additionally, the teacher will instruct two sections per quarter of the 8th-grade Public Speaking class within the Interdisciplinary Studies and Independent Research Department.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree related to the field
  • Experience teaching and coaching middle and high school students
  • Experience in one or more competitive speech events (e.g., original oratory, interpretation, extemporaneous speaking, etc.)
  • A student-centered approach that actively engages student voice
  • Strong teamwork, organization, and collegiality
  • A deep commitment to subject expertise
  • Clear and thoughtful communication with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Enthusiasm for becoming an engaged member of a vibrant school community

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the head coach for our competitive speech teams
  • Run effective after-school practice and training sessions at the middle and upper school campuses
  • Hire and supervise assistant speech coaches
  • Travel with speech team members to competitions
  • Teach two sections per quarter of 8th grade Public Speaking class as a member of the Interdisciplinary Studies and Independent Research Department
  • Chaperone a grade-level retreat in October
  • Lead an advisory or supervise lunch (twice in the 8-day cycle)
  • Engage in school life through admissions, student clubs, affinity groups, service, and other community programs
