About The Position

PLA Special Education Paraprofessionals support students’ educational and social development and help create a caring classroom environment. They work under the supervision of the building principal, with direct supervision from special education teachers. Day-to-day duties vary based on the students’ ages and the nature and severity of their disabilities.

The role includes supporting implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), assisting students inside and outside the classroom, and collaborating with other professionals who serve students. The position is based at Higher Institute of Arts and Technology (HIAT), a charter school in Merrillville, Indiana, serving more than 200 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Requirements

• Passion for working with students and families in underserved communities.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and families.

• Some college experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist in students’ educational and social development under the direction and guidance of the facilitator and classroom teachers.
• Assist with implementing students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and monitor their progress.
• Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom.
• Work with professionals such as speech therapists, social workers, and occupational and physical therapists.
• Assist the building-level special education department with maintaining student records.
• Support students with behavior concerns and help them develop appropriate social skills.
• Assist with preparing and displaying student work.
• Help special education teachers prepare materials for students.
