About The Position

The Specimen Technician is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed include presort, pickup, and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with accuracy and in a timely manner. The role requires strong organizational skills to understand specimen types related to ordered tests and compliance regulations that may change regularly. Flexibility is essential to meet changing departmental needs. The position primarily operates on the night shift, but weekend, holiday, on-call, and overtime availability may be required based on staffing demands. The department operates in a production environment with an emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and departmental completion times.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic understanding of computers.
  • Proven ability to enter data at a rate of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Ability to handle -20 degree temperatures for 5-10 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of laboratory testing and laboratory specimen processing preferred.
  • Medical background, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory, is preferred.
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a high-volume production environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, including A-station duties, presorting, pickup, and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory.
  • Execute specimen imaging, microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Sort, pick, scan, store, and pull samples from refrigeration or freezer units.
  • Work in a biohazard environment while adhering to good safety habits and compliance policies.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to foster a positive team environment.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
