About The Position

The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background and the ability to perform various functions including A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. The role demands confidence, accuracy, and timeliness in all performed functions. The position is complex, requiring good organizational skills and the ability to learn and understand different specimen types related to ordered tests, as well as compliance regulations that may change daily. This role is critical for quality and customer satisfaction, necessitating flexibility to adapt to changing demands and a variety of customer needs. The SPT I will primarily work the night shift but must be available for weekends, holidays, on-call duties, and overtime based on staffing requirements. The department operates in a production environment with an emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and departmental completion times. The role involves working in a biohazard environment, requiring good safety habits, and the ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Effective communication with all staff levels, adherence to core values, safety, and compliance policies, maintaining a neat and clean work area, and demonstrating strong interpersonal skills for a positive environment are essential. Flexibility and adaptability to change are also key attributes.

Requirements

Data entry background.
Ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour.
Basic understanding of computers.
HS diploma or equivalent.
Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
Flexibility and ability to adapt to change.
Availability for weekends, holidays, on call, and overtime.

Nice To Haves

Preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing.
Previous laboratory experience preferred.
Medical background preferred which includes medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
Previous hospital laboratory experience is a plus but not required.
Previous experience in a production environment preferred.

Responsibilities
