About The Position

The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background and involves tasks such as A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with accuracy and in a timely manner. The role is complex, requiring good organization skills, the ability to learn and understand different specimen types and related tests, and comprehension of changing compliance regulations. This position is critical for quality and customer satisfaction, demanding flexibility to adapt to various customer demands and daily changes. The department operates in a production environment with an emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and departmental completion times. The SPT I will work in a biohazard environment, requiring good safety habits. The role involves sitting or standing for long periods, effective communication with all staff levels, adherence to core values, safety, and compliance policies, maintaining a neat and clean work area, and demonstrating strong interpersonal skills for a positive environment.

Requirements

  • Data entry background.
  • Ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour.
  • HS diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of computers.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
  • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Adheres to core values, safety and compliance policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and ability to adapt to change.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Medical background preferred which includes medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience is a plus but not required.
  • Previous experience in a production environment preferred.
  • Preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing.

Responsibilities
