About The Position

The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background and involves accessioning, which includes sitting for 8 hours and being held to productivity standards. Functions performed may include A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner. The role is complex, requiring good organization skills and the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to ordered tests, as well as compliance regulations which may change frequently. This position is critical to quality and customer satisfaction, demanding flexibility and adaptability to various customer demands. The department is a production environment with an emphasis on productivity/quality standards and departmental completion times. The role requires a data background with the ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour. The SPT I works in a biohazard environment, practicing good safety habits, and must be able to sit or stand for long periods. Effective communication with all levels of staff, adherence to core values, safety and compliance policies, and maintaining a neat and clean work area are essential. Strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive environment are also required.

Requirements

  • Data entry background.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Medical background preferred which includes medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience is a plus but not required.
  • Previous experience in a production environment preferred.
  • Preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing.
