About The Position

Wander Staffing is seeking four (4) Specialty Inpatient Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide on-site inpatient nursing care to Veterans at Sheridan VA Medical Center in Sheridan, WY. The role involves direct and indirect nursing care with independent judgment and an interdisciplinary approach, including patient assessment, planning, medication administration, critical care, and patient/family education. The RN will also manage admissions, discharges, and transfers, and may work in various units including Medical Nursing, Inpatient Mental Health, or the Community Living Center.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a state-approved nursing program accredited by ACEN or CCNE at completion
  • Current RN license in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or DC
  • NPI
  • BLS, ACLS
  • Minimum one (1) year of direct patient care within the last three (3) years
  • VA credentialing and privileging (VetPro) before starting, with ongoing competency review
  • Current CEUs
  • Physical exam within 30 days before applying for privileges
  • Negative TB test (TST or IGRA) within the past year (chest x-ray if positive)
  • MMR and varicella immunity
  • Tdap
  • Annual flu vaccine (or masking)
  • Hepatitis B immunity or series started
  • Hepatitis C titer
  • Bloodborne pathogen training
  • Able to pass a Tier 2 (Moderate Risk) background investigation and obtain a VA PIV card
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. (E-Verify)
  • Not listed on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect nursing care with independent judgment and an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Take patient and family history, assess, plan, re-assess, and revise care.
  • Perform critical care nursing for ICU patients.
  • Verify and carry out physician orders, including medication orders from the previous shift.
  • Administer medications and IV therapies and document patient response.
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms.
  • Operate defibrillators, EKG machines, cardiac monitors, and other emergency equipment.
  • Know common emergency drugs and the crash cart.
  • Recognize emergencies, start life-saving measures when no physician is present, and assist with surgical and diagnostic procedures.
  • Assess intake and output every shift, review lab data and records, perform skin assessments to prevent Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers (HAPU), and care for patients with catheters and prostheses.
  • Teach patients and families about medications, therapies, and procedures, record their understanding, and participate in discharge planning.
  • Review the EHR in advance to prepare for the next day’s patients; sign prepared reports to confirm accuracy.
  • Communicate patient data to the Charge Nurse and/or physician.
  • Report to the VA Nurse Manager on weekdays, and through the Charge Nurse to the Nursing Supervisor on evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Follow patient safety and infection control standards and VA customer service standards.
  • Respect patient privacy.
  • Manage admissions, discharges, and internal and external transfers.
  • Delegate to assistive staff.
  • Help with patient transport.
  • Units may include Medical Nursing (telemetry and medicine, including vaccinations and COVID-19 swabbing), Inpatient Mental Health (recovery-based programming), or the Community Living Center (daily care of Veterans).
