About The Position

The City of Burlington is seeking a Specialized Program Instructor, RCC – Drama to lead Fall/Winter/Spring Burlington Student Theatre programs for children and youth aged 4-17 years. This role is ideal for a passionate drama educator and theatre practitioner who enjoys working with young performers in a collaborative, creative, and supportive environment. The instructor will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging drama-based instruction to develop participants' acting, improvisation, storytelling, character development, and performance skills. This role supports various Burlington Student Theatre programs and productions, including mainstage shows at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre. Working collaboratively with artistic program staff, directors, and support staff, the instructor will foster a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment, helping participants build confidence, performance skills, creativity, and stage presence throughout the rehearsal and performance process.

Requirements

  • Completion of a College Diploma or University Degree in Drama, Performing Arts, Arts Education, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and professional experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in drama instruction, theatre education, youth performance programs, or related theatrical productions.
  • Experience working with children and/or youth in a recreational or educational setting.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating safe spaces for youth.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C certifications are required (or willingness to obtain).
  • A clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performance activities that support the artistic and personal development of youth participants.
  • Guide participants in the development of acting skills, including improvisation, character development, storytelling, scene work, and performance techniques.
  • Prepare scripts, rehearsal materials, lesson plans, and supplemental resources to support program and production objectives.
  • Collaborate with creative team to plan and execute the creative vision of a variety of performances and productions.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.
  • Support participants in developing performance skills, confidence, and teamwork.
  • Communicate effectively with families, staff, and City representatives as required.
  • Ensure all activities align with City policies, safety standards, and program expectations.
  • Escalate behavioural, safety, or wellbeing concerns as appropriate.
  • Assist in ensuring the safety and supervision of participants both on and offsite and are expected to implement and participate in activities.
