About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Specialist-level Mechanical Design Engineer to design components and systems for solid propulsion systems used in solid rocket motors and/or controllable solid systems. The role involves working with minimal direction and exercising latitude in determining objectives and approaches. The engineer may lead designs for Hot Gas Thrusters, Insulation Systems, Manifolds, Ignition Systems, Pressure Vessels, Test Hardware, and other advanced propulsion systems. The position supports mechanical design for composite cases and solid propulsion components, from concept development and 3D modeling through detailed manufacturing drawings. The engineer works with analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality, customer support, and supply chain teams, and participates in production and supplier activities. The role also supports testing, risk reduction, configuration management, technical reviews, and engineering reports. The job is located in Huntsville, Alabama, has a 9/80 schedule, and requires 25% local and supplier travel. The candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years of prior mechanical design experience; or a graduate degree and at least 2 years of prior mechanical design experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 8 years of prior mechanical design experience.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Working knowledge of the application of relevant concepts, practices, and techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CREO CAD software.
  • Experience with Windchill PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with solid rocket motors.
  • Knowledge of solid propulsion systems design and manufacturing methods.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or perform mechanical design activities for composite cases and solid propulsion systems and components.
  • Develop design concepts and 3D models, and support development of detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Conduct trade studies and develop component specifications and procedures as required.
  • Interact with component analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality, customer support, and supply chain groups.
  • Plan and execute complex design tasks with general oversight and work effectively within an Integrated Product Team (IPT).
  • Review work products.
  • Participate in shop-floor and production hardware processing at suppliers and internally.
  • Provide input to address nonconforming hardware, support process planning and production meetings, and work with supply chain to ensure design requirements are met.
  • Support engineering drawing and specification updates at configuration change boards.
  • Develop or assist in developing test plans and technical reviews.
  • Assist in identifying and supporting risk-reduction and environmental test requirements, including manufacturing pathfinders, subscale testing, and component- and system-level qualification tests.
  • Prepare materials and support presentations for internal and external customers.
  • Prepare engineering reports for tolerance studies, engineering analyses, or failure investigations, including technical close-out reports.
